Yes, safari crashes on startup for me almost every time on my iPad 1. If I go to advanced settings and put the debug console on it will sometimes allow safari to start and work for a while. But then soon after, it's crashing again and again immediately after starting. New problem after ios 5 update. Only problem I'm seeing.
I switched all the iCloud merged options to off in settings. so far that seems to be preventing the constant crashes on my iPad 1.
Both Safari and Email apps are crashing on me at startup but then will work for awhile the second time i try. Then they crash after a few minutes of use. Seems IOS5 on original ipad may have some issues.
I'm having the same problem on iPad 2 with iOS 5. Safari opens to white screen but when you touch any part of the screen it crashes down to the iPad home screen. I closed the app, cleared the cache, did a hardware restart, etc. No change. All other apps are working fine, including those accessing the Internet via either wi-fi or 3G. This is frustrating.
Im getting very frequent crashes of iPad 1/ios5/ safari (or more specifically whatever the web view is, since it also happens when viewing pages in Zite or Twitter). Ive probably had as many crashes of those apps as ive had in any apps since i got the ipad almost a year ago, or at least it seems that way. Definitely started with ios5.
I have both Mail and safari crashing on launch on my Iphone 3GS,
IOS5 Update has been a disaster for me ever since I went for the update

100 pct correct -- though even better I was able to narrow it down to one simple thing: bookmarks sync in iCloud.
Turn that off, problem goes away.
Then turn it back on, still no problem. Problem gone, syncing on.
Maybe something unique for me, maybe not. I'd be interested if that works for anyone else in this discussion.
That was it exactly! Many thanks.
First thing i did after ios5 install was turn everything in iCloud settings off since i didnt plan to use, so that "shouldnt" be whats causing my crashes.
Same here, Terry. I don't have iCLoud running (that I know of). My crashes in Safari seem to be random, but may be related to page content that is being loaded.
Your fix was suggested to me by another user on the site so I turned off bookmarks sync with iCloud. About an hour later, Safari crashed again.
My own experience on this, I have downloaded one free app since I upgraded and I used automatic downloads for this one. I did this merely as a test. I have since deleted that app to see if that was causing the problem. However, I just dumped it about 15 minutes ago. Ironically it was Apple's itunes movie trailer app!
I will be anxious to see now if I have better success with Safari. It was running fine in iOS 4.3.5 for me. And .... I disabled automatic downloads again as well!!!
Yes. Safter upgrading to iOS5 on my iPad 2, Safari and other apps that present Web based content crash inexplicably. However, it depends on the content of the web page. For eample, TechCruch.com ALWAYS crashes. In other cases where the content is media rich including video, Safari crashes. Looking at the logs in the Developer tab of the settings screen I see A LOT of "out of memory errors". So, I guess iOS 5 is quite the memory hog and we who have the iPad 1 with a mere 256K of RAM are paying the price. Who know when/if this issue will be resolved.
I thought after my 4th crash today with Safari that I would simply add my disgusted two cents worth again. It is becoming extemely annoying and I am clueless as to what to try next - restore maybe - I have no clue as to what else to try now.
Im also seeing out of memory errors along my crash logs. Would be nice to know Apple is at least aware there seems to be an issue with iPad1
I have the same problem (IPAD1+IOS5).
