Dec 18, 2011 1:27 AM in response to petemj23by Johan Pettersson1,Same problem here. Safari crashes very frequently on my iPad 1 with ios 5, and it also feels slow. Did NOT have these isues with ios 4. Tried a restore and some other stuff, and it does not help. It is somewhat more stable just after the restore, but after a while it starts crashing again.

Dec 18, 2011 1:40 AM in response to Johan Pettersson1by Ulrik J,Go to Settings / iCloud and switch off as many settings as possible. Reminders, bookmarks and notes have worked well for me but not solved the problem completely. The other alternative is to drop iCloud completely and revert to ways of old.
Pretty fundamental fault with iCloud and a bit of a schoolboy error by Apple. One would have thought they would have checked that one out!

Dec 18, 2011 4:43 AM in response to Ulrik Jby Bobblemonster,I don't have iCloud, nor any apps loaded, it is factory fresh from Apple (replacement) and it still crashes within 10 seconds!!
Never a problem with ios 4, what does that tell you??????

Dec 18, 2011 5:41 AM in response to Bobblemonsterby Picnicmetoo,Not much. My husband's Ipad 1 with a moderate amount of apps which he uses infrequently but uses Safari all the time never crashes (IOS 5.0.1). Mine with many apps, many heavy content ones with lots of input from me used all the time, crashes inconsistently but certainly not all the time. I have turned off many Icloud things but not all, usually end up doing a reset once a day now. My several friends with Ipad one with IOS5.0 have rare crashes but don't use theirs as much as me or push it hard but do use it for business use daily, my several friends with Ipad 2 say they rarely crash with IOS5.0.1 and most use theirs for both personal and business. So, any of us could relate our experiences and say the same as you--"what does this tell you" and none of them would be able to "tell us" the whole story.

Dec 18, 2011 6:36 AM in response to Picnicmetooby Ulrik J,It tells us that IOS 5.01 contains a crucial bug, which Apple is going to have to fix. And fix quickly. Safari is a cornerstone of the iPad and without it the device is pretty useless. given the emerging competition from other producers, now is not the time to have a fundamental fault in your software
I forgot to mention previously that I am an iPad1 user. I have disabled all the iCloud sync functionalities, includinfg documents, and it certainly has speeded things up and reduced the frequency of crashes - though they remain at an unacceptable level. E-mail of course remains on as once migrated, that is it.
Like many others I am not very impressed with this and do not understand what all the iCloud hype was about. It is now a glorified hotmail account.

Dec 18, 2011 7:26 AM in response to FrankTheRabbitby PirataCoqui,Frank,
I can confirm that the first time I clicked on this link my iPad 1 crashed, the second time it worked fine. I too have been having safari crashing, as well as other crashes after the os5 update. I have been living with it but recently it has been affecting my productivity quite a bit, I really would like this fixed. I had enabled crash reports as of today just because of this.

Dec 18, 2011 9:38 AM in response to PirataCoquiby robert from east stroudsburg,I have an iPad 1 and it has been crashing too. Mostly with Safari, but it also has calendar issues. I finally shut down the location services and it hasn't crashed for the last two days.

Dec 18, 2011 11:06 AM in response to petemj23by MrG2012,I have an iPad1 and I have been suffering constant crashes after patching to iOS5 with Safari, Youtube and Apps that uses webview such as Flipboard.
Youtube usually fails to display video when using it form webview or safari, I only get just audio.

Dec 18, 2011 7:23 PM in response to MrG2012by fotkin,I stopped using my iPad 1 for now, just can't use it... After opening a few pages in Safari, it crashes, and yesterday, when I typed a long reply to my email, after I pressed Send, MailApp crashed... Nice. So, I did a full restart just in case, and type a short email, pressed Sent, and it crashed again!
Now I hope for 5.0.2 release, where this will be fixed!
I spoke with Apple customer service on the phone when I had 5.0.0 and I was told to wait for 5.0.1 But it didn't help at all...
So, no use for iPad for now...

Have you performed a factory reset then reloaded your backup?

Dec 19, 2011 3:20 AM in response to MrG2012by Gully666uk,I to have had these problems, many times a day my iPad has crashed. Between this and my 4s battery issues Im not having such a good time with apple products at moment.

Dec 19, 2011 4:43 AM in response to petemj23by RC1952,I just lost my latest bit of info while writing a reply in a forum.
Sure is a pain.
I suppose all will be fixed when IPad 3 comes out and we will all run off and buy it because the ipad1 and 2 are no longer viable.
Hats off to Apple for such a good marketing strategy.
I have not done a reset and I have not removed Icloud stuff, I use Icloud and do think it is good, but this safari thing is very annoying.
I find if I type very slowly safari does not crash. Or may be I am typing so slowwwwwww I don't notice.
I have got in the habit of taking copies of the text I write every now and again or use notepad and cut and paste.
I guess we Will have to wait till the press get knowledge of this issue or perhaps a competitor.

Dec 19, 2011 5:15 AM in response to petemj23by steeleblue,I ran into this issue after I updated my OS too. I tried all the regular stuff, clearing cookies, data, etc. I rebooted, reset, restored from backup, and finally did a full restore to factory settings and rebuilt my iPad, one app at a time. Nothing helped. Unlike some have said I couldn't reliably reproduce the crashes. It was so random, some times I could browse for 20 mins or so and sometimes it would crash immediately.
Checking the Diagnostics and Usage I kept seeing low memory immediately after a crash so I did a search on low memory and found a post on MacRumors about optimizing memory for iPad 1's. The first suggestion was to disable all the Spotlight Search helpers you don't use. I never use Spotlight so I disabled all of them. I haven't had ann crashes for almost 3 weeks now.
I have posted this on a couple of threads but as far as I know nobody has posted that it worked for them so I don't know if it will work for you but until Apple comes out with something you might try it.
