Q: Safari crashes on iPad after ios 5 update

Regarding the Lion video and javascript, if I have javascript turned off I can "click to watch" again, and it won't crash, but if I enable javascript and click on it, it crashes.

Next step is a full factory restore and see what happens.  If it works with that, I will restore it again from my icloud back up and see what happens.  If it starts crashing again I'm off to the apple store to see what they say. (I have an ipad 1 that I bought 2 weeks after they shipped.)

I went to the apple store and "my genius" was quite helpful.  I showed him how I could open the Lion video and it crashed.  I forced close a couple of apps, Keynote and PDF Expert, and it would work.  I said I shouldn't have to do that though, and he totally agreed. 

He said do a full restore, which I expected and I did.  Reloaded all apps, passwords, and data I needed and it's working OK now.  He did make a note of it so they'll know to do something else if it happens again.  (I'm only 5 minutes from my local store, so that makes it nice, I guess.)

I realize from reading a fair amount of this thread that it won't work for everyone but it is definitely worth doing. 

The genius said that it shouldn't be happening from what I'm doing and it's not a RAM shortage.  Also he said even if Apple patches this fix it's best to go ahead and do a full restore as sometimes the patch doesn't help if you're already experiencing the problem.

Unbelievable, I type all that out, think let me try it again, and sure enough it crashes. lol, or cry out loud I guess. Another appointment tomorrow...

Safari in iOS5 on iPad 1 or 2, is junk... plain and simple. In iOS 4.3, I never had a problem... the minute I installed iOS 5, errors, crashes, badly rendered pages etc...

Count me in. 2dfu restores by genii and still low memory crashes in safari . 

I switched to "Perfect Browser" from app store. Fixed!

How long ago did you make the switch? Are you able to view the infamous OSX Lion viedo on Apple's website without the browser going down? Those bits of info would be helpful to know.

Perfect Browser doesn't solve the problem either. Just spent $2.95 to find that out. One good thing is that Perfect Browser has a pop up low memory warning that at least prepares you for the crash. I actually like the browser, but it doesn't come close to solving the low memory problem.

The DFU is obviously a waste of time, I wouldn't suggest it.  When I went back to the Genius there was basically nothing he could do.  I think that is why they are suggesting you force quit your apps, much like an Android device, because the OS isn't doing it properly.  Ideally you shouldn't have to. But the geniuses have nothing else to tell you today.  He offered to replace my ipad 1 with another for $299.  I guarantee that one would have done the same thing.  He also suggested I try another browser, Atomic.  Isn't that like going to Ford and saying your steering wheel isn't working great and they tell you to go to Chevrolet and ask if one of theirs would work?  Not totally the same, but you get my drift.

As someone else has mentioned it needs a software fix.  Apple and the genii must know this.  It would have saved us all, especially me, a lot of time if they would have just said that in the beginning. 

brom1212, you are 100% correct. A replacement will do the same thing. Both of my replacements (received in January 2012) still crash. Even not reloading my Mail application (which the latest Genius suggested) has no positive effect on the problem. ****, I hardly have any apps on my iPad any more!

So what's the point of even having an iPad? Today alone, Safari crashed both times I used it; Angry Birds crashed; The Daily crashed; and iBooks crashed (ironically while I was finishing Walter Isaacson's bio of SJ).

This is simply something Apple must address and fix. And that none of the big tech sites have brought this up is mind-boggling. Absolutely mind-bogling.

I am at a loss as to how no big tech blogs, nota have been reporting this. I can't find so much as a YouTube video on the issue.

This thread also gets clipped down and pruned regularly enough.

Everyone I know with a first gen iPad is having issues. I even know a few ipad2 users also having issues. I come here. Same issues..

Still hope a software update in the near future fixes this. Just happy no matter what, I now live in a world were competition has finally caught up with the iPad. Cheaper, arguably better hardware is now for sale. No more monopoly on tabs. (transformer prime quad core 32g for $499 anyone?).

I was brought into the world of apple via the iPad. It was the first tab on the market thus my only choice. Lucky for apple my finicky iPad and my wife's Playbook (bought for $199) are getting the job done. If I was buying a new tab today it wouldn't be anything apple.

I seriously doubt even if the issue is resolved will I buy apple slates again. I don't own a Mac. I would love to don't get me wrong. The problem is my Dell was half the price and twice as powerful with more on board memory and storage. As I already stated. The competition has finally caught apple in the tab market. My only reason to pay a premium to apple (it just works lol) is fully dead at this point.

If I have hurt anyone's feelings I am sorry I'm just posting my thoughts here... Also I still love my iphone4. Entirely possible I will keep on with them in the mobile phone market in the future... Alas I'll cross that bridge in a year or two when my contracts up.

I'm emailing and tweeting to some pundits.  We'll see if it does any good.  Hopefully my "bet" of opening many apps, and watching the lion video in landscape mode will cause any ipad 1 to crash, will pay off.

fwiw, I still really like my iPad. I'm in sales and use keynote, PDF expert, noteshelf, and mail primarily all day. It does sound like others' iPads are crashing more than mine though.

My issue is that a company with the resources and reputation of Apple would let a seemingly simple (for them anyway) coding error go on for so long without being fixed.

I switched about a week ago. I'll try what you suggested and post results. I haven't had a single crash since switching. I also, however, do the home double-tap to free up memory frequently.
