Hey all. The good folks from OSX Daily got back to me a few minutes ago via Twitter. They've posted on their site about this issue, mentioned these forums, and put up some potential fixes for at least some people having this problem.

    http://osxdaily.com/2012/01/29/fix-safari-crashing-on-ipad-and-ios-5/

Since I've had two replacement iPads and have done most of these, they might not help me or a few of us, but for most people, they're worth at least trying.

Mostly, it's great that a website that has a high profile among Apple users is finally letting the word out about the issue.

I haven't read these posts recently so I apologize if the below has been reported. After 4 visits to Genius Bar, twice reloading OS, and having my device replaced with a new iPad1, I emailed Tim Cook about the problem. Someone from the Exec Office support group called the next day and connected me to an engineer who I emailed log files to. They were back in touch a few days later. Unfortunately, they didn't have a solution and would not say when a fix would be available only that the engineers are aware of the problem and are working on it.  They advised that I update the OS when updates come out.  The gentleman I dealt with seemed almost embarrassed that he couldn't provide a better repsonse.

Same thing happened to me, emailed Tim Cook, got the call back, etc. The Tech guy had me do clean wipe and trash the ipsw file in the Library on my MacBook Pro, thus determining that there isn't anything wrong with my iPad 1 since after the new ipsw file and reinstall the same crashes started up again, so no point ongoing through the whole trade-in bit. And no idea of when/if a fix is coming. I have had slightly better performance/fewer crashes in Safari with the Debug console turned on, and it's interesting to see from that how much Facebook plugins cause problems. I reported that back, too. I'm done doing resets and am just making sure I keep the task bar cleared before going online, plus not having more than a couple of tabs open at any one time. Hope we get a fix soon.

Thanks for the updates.  Obviously, they have a RAM management problem, hard for me to understand how they haven't been able to fix it yet.  I never had these issues when running iOS4. In addition to the above, I'm also having the strange cache issue, my kenote files being deleted, and on my iphone the issue of having no outgoing audio.

I don't know if it's all iOS5, but something needs to be done.

Makes me glad I wasn't able to upgrade.  NOW I don't even plan to upgrade as long as I can.  Not really worth loosing good function at this point.

My ipad1 with safari is not fit for purpose. It crashes on nearly every web site i wish to use.

I cannot understand how thay have kept this scandal out of the news.

Microsoft Windows was never as  bad as this.

I have really tried hard on Google but can find no statement from Apple at all.

I am very dissalusioned with my apple experience.

While not specifically about crashes on iPad 1, Forbes did just do an article about iOS crashes, as compared to Android.

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/tomiogeron/2012/02/02/does-ios-crash-more-than-andro id-a-data-dive/

There is a lovely pie chart that shows that the largest chunk of crashes have come with iOS 5. So maybe the apple press might someday start talking about this issue.

That's hugely helpful!   I've had this issue with Safari ever since updating the system on my iPad a few months ago.   I had one evening where Safari quit on me 7 times in one hour.  I've not bothered trying an Apple store or support because I am not interested in being made to jump through useless hoops and usless actions that waste my time because I know they won't fix this---as evidenced here.  it's a software issue, not something that the user can fix.  Apple has to fix it and first they have to acknowledge the problem which they will have to with that Forbes article staring them in the face!

Yes the iPad crashes.  I had to start out with that statement so the monitor doesn't kick me out for being "off topic".  Look at http://osxdaily.com/2012/01/29/fix-safari-crashing-on-ipad-and-ios-5/

    The article addresses the crash problems.  But read the comments below it.  Quite interesting;

That link has been posted before Martin, it's at the top of the page.  I have been frustrated as anyone by this.  Apple knows about it and is working on it, I don't think press attention will help us get a software fix any sooner.  It would probably make us feel better though.

I still like Apple and love my ipad.  I turned on the debug console, and while ugly it has seemed to help.

Jill, if your ipad crashes that much, I would suggest a reboot if you haven't tried that already.  It's a RAM management issue, and that will free up all your RAM.  I have done that and it holds off crashing for quite a while.

Same here. Crashing all the time. Even after rebooting to clear memory.

Yes, but whatever I had posted (except my first post) was removed from the board as being "off Topic". So I'm not sure what remains by anyone.

People who have problems with crashes should power down. Then they should restart & go to Settings, General, Reset, Reset all settings.  It solves a lot of problems for a while.

I still love my iPad and just live with the occassional (each day) Safari crash.  It does so many things well and its a heck of a lot of fun.

I wonder if some "heavier" websites that most of us use that are contributing to these crashes... like gmail or facebook?

I almost always have gmail in one tab, and sometime facebook.

I never go to gmail or Facebook.  I do go to MSNBC, CNN MacRumors, some other forums.  I've had it crash immediately after a complete reset and opening xda-developers.  But I do usually gave a couple of tabs open.  But my surfing habits have not changed from 4.3.  It's the new OS.  Of that I'm certain.
