Feb 10, 2012 12:25 PM in response to petemj23by Mari500,Ever since I upgraded to IOS 5 Safari has crashed from 10 to 20 times every day if I'm forced to use my iPad. I prefer using my laptop because of the incredible inconvenience iPad is causing.
I had my iPad for 10 months before it became useless. Apple has received all the hundreds of error logs automatically and obviously couldn't care less. I assume 10 months is the expected life span for Apple products. Had I known it I would have used my money more wisely.

Feb 11, 2012 11:57 PM in response to petemj23by Sascha Muellner,Hi all,
First at all I do not have an iPad 1 but are using two iPad 2 with iOS 5.
Both of them never crashed even when used with Chinese and Japanese websites ;).
So I would guess it is a problem with the webkit engine for the iPad 1. Most of the browsers in the AppStore use the same engine and us such will suffer the same issues. But as far as I know the "opera" browser uses it is own engine.
It is freely available just search for "opera".
- Install it
- power cycle the iPad
- And use it for some days
- then come back and say if it helped
Lastly I am not working for Opera and prefer Safari anytime over it, so Apple please fix this issue as I am also using your webkit engine in my products.
Hope this helped someone
Sascha

Feb 12, 2012 12:17 AM in response to Sascha Muellnerby Catsman,Very interesting! I have tried ALL suggestions to solve this problem but none worked.
I could make Safari crash on one website every time. However, Opera has handled it. Tried it 4 or 5 times. Will let you know how it goes later in the week.

Feb 12, 2012 9:08 AM in response to Catsmanby markjay,My IPad1 IOS 5 has same problems.
I have been to the Apple store multi times. Last week they gave me a new IPad 1.
Starting fresh, I was hoping the crash issue would end. "NOT" Same thing, except even more so.
Now after crashing and turning itself off, I have problems being able to retart.
I would think after the totally high numbers of us having same issues, Apple would respond with some
assurance of a fix in progress. I might as well trade mine in for a paper weight

Feb 12, 2012 9:12 AM in response to markjayby Sascha Muellner,@markjay: Can you please check my suggestion and testdrive the opera browser (free in the appstore).
Someone else said that "Atomic Web Browser" is also working, but it actually costs "1$".

Well, after turning off ICloud and a major crash again, I finally got restarting and I'm trying the Opera app.
I hope it helps.
When you or others IPad crash, does it shut off ??. Mine does and it can take 1/2 to an hour to restart

Feb 12, 2012 9:58 AM in response to markjayby Sascha Muellner,@markjay Thanks for testing.
Actually the last crash I had was with my old iPhone 3GS, which was an application leaking memory. Usually the app is closed and the memory is cleared, so you should be fine.
A crash which shutsdown the iPad is - in my opinion - more like a hardware failure and I would check for a replacement.

Feb 12, 2012 10:08 AM in response to Sascha Muellnerby markjay,This IPad is only a week or 2 old after being replaced, but guess I will have to try Apple genius support again.
They like pretend they have no knowledge of issues so will just wait and see. It is a bit like going to the doctor, You get there and the problem does not happen :-)

Feb 12, 2012 10:15 AM in response to Sascha Muellnerby Alick from Hertford,Been following this trail for a while - somewhere a long way back, I flagged the OS X Lion video (http://www.apple.com/uk/macosx/whats-new/#video-lion) as one that would crash my iPad consistently. Interested in this exchange about whether or not it crashes the iPad - mine just crashed Safari. Screen goes black, then back to the normal iPad home screen.

Feb 12, 2012 1:29 PM in response to Alick from Hertfordby markjay,Well, back from the Apple store with yet another IPad 1. 2nd one in 2 weeks.
They where very nice but had no explanations about why I have repeated total shut downs except it might be a infected app but the problem existed on about all apps. Now it is wait and see. Seems like they are running out of original series 16K 3G models

Feb 12, 2012 2:40 PM in response to MNDaveCby tasa,Have you turned on the Debug Console in Safari? After many times resetting, wiping and reloading everything on my iPad 1, turning on the Debug Console is the only thing that has given me any insight into Safari crashes. If you look at the error messages noted by the Debug Console, Facebook plugins to Safari are nearly always the cause of error messages, so that says to me something needs to be fixed on that front. I also have seen improved performance by having only one tab open at a time, and by periodically (at least once a day) clearing the Safari history. And yes, I have gone through the whole troubleshooting thing with Apple support, and beyond determining that there is nothing wrong with my iPad they had no other useful ideas. Turning on the Debug console was the only thing I could think of to try after Apple was no help.

Thanks for the info. Looks like my problems are hardware not software issues. Hoping my 2nd new IPad in 2 weeks will be the answer

Feb 12, 2012 6:26 PM in response to markjayby JP_Seoul,a new iPad 1 is not the answer. iOS 4 worked perfectly for me, but iOS is unusable, especially Safari. See the pattern?

Feb 13, 2012 2:12 AM in response to markjayby tasa,I hope you get better results. In addition to my other suggestions, you might want to try setting up the new replacement iPad as a new iPad, rather than restoring from the old iTunes file. Then download your paid-for apps directly from the App Store, that way you rule out any bad app files. Good luck to you and let us know what happens. Tasa
