    Thanks ...

I did set up the new one last week as a new unit, and will do the same.

I also did download apps from the "paid for app" and will do so again.

It is such a pain, but hope I will not have the same crash and burn issues again.

How terribly frustrating for you! Hard to believe that they can't even hand you a replacement that doesn't have problems. Maybe Apple is too busy getting ready for the iPad 3 to be released to focus on our problems. Though I love most of what my iPad 1 can do, Internet access is at least 60% of my iPad usage. Even if I had the money to upgrade to the ipad 3 I wouldn't consider it unless/until Apple fixes the current problems and demonstrates their ability to keep their products functional. Good luck to you.

    Well..

The new Ipad is now  1 day running w/o crashing  :-)

I like you will not consider any new product till fixes are made, and it would sure be nice if

Apple acknowledged that there is a problem . Good thing I bought the AppleCare plan, that made them have to deal with my issues. There will be problems with current owners with problems and they run out of replacements.

I needed a new case but the Apple Store does not carry IPad 1 cases anymore.

    Anyway, thanks for the feedback

Good luck. I suspect the new ipad wasn't the problem. just getting one with a clean slate was what probably fixed the problem.

BTW if you are interexted in a case, I found a nice one on ebay that I ma happy with. I actually found it on Amazon first and it had a lot of great reviews, I just found it on ebay cheaper.

Technocel Leather Flip Book Case/folio for Apple Ipad 1 (New, Black)

I paid like 15 dollars for it, a great deal.

    Thank You.

I will do some research on eBay. I did look up the Technocel case and yes it does look cool.

Amazon also does show the same case and I have a credit with them from taking online surveys.

I found a survey site that does make it worth it

if interested I've gotten hundreds of $'s for Amazon gift cards .   the site is   www.gongos.com

    Again, Thanks

My wife's Ipad (original 16gig - wifi) is constantly crashing when running safari.  I've asked her to let me sell it so we can just buy the new one that's about to be released.  However, money is tight and she doesn't want to spend the extra cash right now.  So we are stuck with a tablet that crashes every few minutes.  Wouldn't it be nice if we could install an Android os on the ipad?  Even if it was slower at least it wouldn't crash every minute.

Could this be planned obsolescence?  How many of you are considering selling your ipad or giving it to a family member and buying the ipad 3 in a few weeks?  I'm definitely considering it.

There are nearly 30 pages of complaints on this thread, wouldn't it be nice if apple at least aknowledged a problem?

Believe me, I have contemplated unloading this thing also before the new one comes out... but would I buy the new one?? well that would take some contemplation!

I have an ipad2 with 256 M of memory and I still have the issue.  I was originally thinking that if the next one came with more memory I might buy one but now I'm not going to.  And if it doesnt have more memory i have no faith that my next one will be ok.  And unless Apple fixes the issue this will be my last Apple product.  I worked in software development for 25+ years and I consider the lack of acknowledgment to be very bad form.  I love the form factor of my iPad but the crashes simply make it unusable at times.  I'm not spending any more money for something I can't use.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for the next update though.

I've accepted that wanting Apple to acknowledge knowledge of the problem is solely for the my peace of mind, and not essential...

    what I'm thinking is

    (1) If it gets fixed (to iOS4-level performance): I will get iPad 3

    (2) If it doesn't: Let my current macs die a natural death, then abandon Apple, and pray that Windows would no longer make me want to rip my heart out and/or that Linux would no longer make me feel like an idiot.

I took your advice and purchased the case you suggested (Technocel) and it is great

I think I'm on day 4 without any crashing "joy" .  My suggestion to anyone in warranty or who purchased the AppleCare, is to go to your local Apple store and plead for a replacement IPad as I did 3 times.

I will really have to think long and hard before I purchase another IPad. Even though they have replaced it, the time and frustration involved really took it's toll on me.

Maybe soon there will be a fix for all of us with the crash issue and we can move on  !!!

If you had AppleCare and they ran out of replacement iPad 1's... would they offer an upgrade to an iPad 2 or 3?  What is Apple's history with this?

I have asked the question about replacements, and did not get a straight answer.

My thought is, that they will keep repairing the returned problem unit and replace as refurbished units.

Bottom line is : no, they will not upgrade to a newer IPad 2 or 3

I was seriously considering an iPad 3. I currently have an iPad 16gb 1st gen. I find it appalling that I've not been able to use my iPad for the things I intended since iOS 5 was installed on it.

Safari crashes mainly on tech websites????

    Apps crash all the time

Dlna apps crash or throw up errors

Websites intermittently print to my hp AirPrint printer and photographs don't print at all anymore it just hangs...

The facebook app is hilariously buggy

Typing lag the like of which I haven't seen since the early nineties.

I wish so much I could roll it back to ios 4.3.5. Everything worked great previously the only thing that works reliably is iBooks and even that crashes. Feel dead cheesed of, I've invested in apps for this platform and an AirPrint printer.

I've tried restoring as new as old, dfu mode everything. Turned off practically every single iOS 5 new feature. Fed up now only had it 18 months and apple broke it on purpose.

£429 Every 12 months is a very poor investment so unless they get their act together I will be giving my money to someone who is keener to fix bugs and properly test software.

So, let me get this straight, spend £429 for a new iPad for the year and at the end of that year you throw it in the bin?

No, you sell it for £300+ meaning your yearly iPad really only costs £10 a month.

Yes the original iPad is less reliable with the new iOS on it, however it is 2 years old. Others can be expected to hold back just because people are hanging on to the 1st gen iPad.

I can assure you, if you buy anything other than an iPad, you'll be disappointed.

I don't know about you, but I cannot in good conscience sell my iPad 1 knowing that it will not work.

I know that iPad is fantastic when it works (before iOS 5, that is), and have no intention to jump to any other maker at this point. I just hope that the others get their act together and make something good.
