Q: Safari crashes on iPad after ios 5 update

Like everyone else on here, I upgraded overnight to 5.1 in expectation that Apple had fixed this problem. No chance!! Same crashes on same site on same app (Safari).

This blog was started on Oct 13th last year, that is a few days off 6 months! Why oh why have Apple totally ignored this issue or not made any statement to calm the growing frustrations and anger of loyal customers? It is no use them putting all their efforts into ipad3 or iPad HD whatever they call it because they are slowly losing customer loyalty by this mismanagement.

have just the same problem with ipad 1 64 3g. tried everything, even took the ipad to our local apple approved repair center, all they could do is offer a replacement at a reduced cost

really hoping ios 5.2 fixes the problem, does anybody know if and when ?

Still more sluggish than iOS -- unlikely to change -- but stabler than 5.01... I have enabled e-mail, iCloud address book sync, and trying to use Safari again but no crashes during the last 29 mins. a record!

ok i was a little confused by ios 5.01 and 5.1, not realising that 5.1 is the new thing

so i tried to download onto the ipad, but its crashed and doesn't seem able to recover, i will leave it alone for a few hrs and try again

Downloaded and installed iOS 5.1 last night onto my iPad I. The download was a little slow probably due to demand on the Apple servers. Installation went without a hitch. Turned on all the services including iCloud. So far no crashes. However I will not be convinced the problem is solved until a few more crash free days.

I downloaded 5.1 last night, in the hopes that we have a fix; but NO GO.  Within minutes, my iPad1 was crashing.  I still have left everything to do with iCloud off.  We need more data from those who seem to think this might be working, because I can not live with this level of perfomance and the word needs to get out on a higher level.  Apple needs to be called out on the carpet here!

Does anyone happen to know Tim Cooks email?  I would like to send him a link to this thread, now that he is done with the iPad3 release.

On a side note, I am experiencing this very same issue on the iPhone4.  Has anyone started to notice the problem on this device as well?

Regarding crashes on IOS 5 from Safari: Everyone, let's face it.  The iPad 1 and 2 are great devices but don't have enough onboard memory to deal with some of the newest webpages that are heavily loaded.  iPad 1 &2 can't render all the pages we get on our desktop and give us the V 5 features at the same time.  That's why it crashes.  You'll notice that if you turn off Java, the crashes all but completely disappear, but you then miss some of the embedded applications of the page.  So whenever you can, download the iPad specific application (if there is one) rather than running the desktop version of the webpage.  That helps reduce crashes.

For me, I'm living with the crashes because the iPad 1 gives me way more pleasure than pain. I'll probably get the iPad 3rd generation, not because I need it, but because once I get my hands on it at the Apple Store, my heart will long for it.  Hope I can resist for a while.

Marty, thank you for the feedback.  I will need to go back and review earlier parts of this thread to find the response that you were given.  I just need more time, as I am at work now.  It might be helpful if you repost again here for reference?  Also, I will need to look into how to turn of Java.  I have not tried that yet for Safari only.

However, my problem does go deeper than just Safari.  In addition to the constant crashing of Safari, my iPad1 will not work with Facebook, USA Today, Mail and even the App Store.  Lately, I have yet to find an application that does not crash and the problem is starting to perculate into the iPhone4.  iOS 5.x has basically rendered my iPad1 "USELESS".  I was more than happy with the existing performance of iOS 4.3 and all levels prior.  Apple should be willing to do something to help us out!  iPad1 customers were the first loyal adopters for this new platform and helped to explode the tablet market into what it is today.  Apple has made soooo much money here, they can certainly afford to help out those with this problem.

Apple, if you are reading this please help?  How do we get this message out to the masses?  How do we get this story told in the New York Time or Wall Street Journal?

Yes, there are numerous threads on this happening with more than just Safari. Read through this thread and you'll find links to those threads as well. I posted at least one, maybe more, because I first noticed the crashes while using apps other than Safari.

so my iPad 1 is still running relatively well, so that's a good sign tho i will need to have a few more day's worth of usage. Most apps run stably (though slower than when it had iOS4), and it's funny how my brain is slowly regaining memory of what I used to do with an iPad before it became a paperweight.

kjkelley4, I have tried so many things that I cannot remember them all, but

1. Resetting your iPad has a new machine

2. Disabling iCloud

3. Disabling Javascript

4. Erasing some apps that like to run in the background like Skype

helped me a bit before 5.1 came out yesterday. #2 and #3 can hurt, but I think it's worth trying.

JP, thank you for the tips.  I have tried all but #3 and I am planning on trying that out tonight.

Martin, did you happen to ask Apple about any chance of going back to iOS 4.3?

Hmmmm,

    I'm running an eight year old laptop (Microsoft), that still runs fine.  My one year old IPAD is now already obsolete?  So I'm supposed to buy an IPAD 3 which may very well also be obsolete in year? Does this make sense?

Couldn't have said it better myself.  Only thing I'd add is this whole bricking my iPad garbage has literally changed every positive feeling I had for Apple.  I hate them and everything they stand for.  I hate what they've become.  I hate that they have Geniuses that don't care and just tell me it'll be fixed.  They can't explain it or why it crashes.  I hate the fact that I've spent thousands of dollars on itunes apps and music becuase I fully intend to switch to anything non-apple.
