Will Siri use more data?

From my experience with Siri today it only works if you have Wifi...so it wont affect your data...which in a way sort of ***** if you want to use it out while jogging etc like in the video.

If you are not in range of a wifi connection, or are not connected via wifi for some other reason, then siri will use 3G data, which of course will count against your plan limits. All of siri's voice processing is done off-device on Apple's servers, so it requires a data connection. Wifi should take precedence when available, but it works over 3G if no wifi connection is available.

Also, just like Dragon dictation, I'd expect some slowdown in response over 3G.

Everything that Michael says is correct, but I would also note that I've found Siri to use a good bit of data. I'm on the 200 MB plan and I made just a few Siri queries which used something like 5 MB of data. On a 2 GB plan that's not so bad, but for me it was significant.

Apple said that Siri was "Beta" but didn't explain why. Maybe they're hoping to get the bandwidth usage down (or maybe it's something else)

My all means, siri uses more data. You ask it to search for some info, and the info comes either as a wiki or wolfram alpha response or the web, all the text and pictures coming through gobble up data. When you say something to siri, the audio has to make its way to Apple's siri servers and data comes back to your phone directing the phone to do things.

Siri will use wifi if it is available otherwise it uses your mobile data. During the first few days following the release, people were having problems connecting to the Apple servers (probably because of insanely high use by everyone playing with their new iPhones) which might have lead one to conclude that it was wifi only, but that is not the case.

So when the original poster asked whether 2GB is enough, it's hard to say. It really depends on how much you use Siri on your mobile data network. That's a function of personal habits that will be influenced by the ease of use Siri enables.

As for why it is Beta, the software isn't quite ready for prime time. Obviously they've got it working for the 4S and the dual cores hide some of the lack of software optimization that would be required to release Siri across other IOS platforms (iPhone 4, iPod touch, iPad, iPad 2). So the real question of whether Apple will get Siri to run on older platforms or require people to buy newer IOS devices isn't answered yet.

Like other has mentioned, Siri used "a lot" of data (depends on what plan you have, and how you define a lot). I used up 30 mb of data by just by playing with Siri in one day (Considering I only used ~170MB on a iphone 4 for the entire month before the 4s, that is a lot). I have also noticed if you run-long on your instuction to Siri, it will take a while for the phone to response to you, during this time I suspect the phone is actually uploading all the voice to the cloud for processing. I used DataMan to watch the upload, and it shows a 2MB upload spike when I ran on and on for 15 second on a reminder.

I also found out if you ask for live traffic over Siri, it will typically use about 3mb of download data.

I haven't used Siri a lot, but I used 4GB of data this month. I have a data allowance of 2GB. Siri is a femme fatale.
