When my iPad 2 mirrors to my Apple TV 2, it goes to a very poor quality.
Help!!
I have tried changing the default resultion on the Apple TV (Menu & Up for 6 seconds), still to no avail 😟

You're probably right, didn't think of it that way.
It was apparently the wall that was between the AppleTV and the Airport Extreme that was to blame. In the living room AirPlay Mirroring works much better, even with Real Racing 2. There is still some lag (FPS) but it's much better.
I'm running a 802.11n (2.4Ghz) network with a multicast rate of 24 Mbps, and i'm guessing it would be even better if i was able to run it on the 5 Ghz frequency, but the iOS devices just don't support that...
I was assuming it must be using some kind of screen sharing technology for real time mirroring and most of those have the abilty to adjust quality/colour depth downwards if available bandwidth is poort - would assume the iPhone does so automatically so poorer quality on slower wi-fi.
That makes sense
So, if I got a N router instead of the G+ one I have now, it might solve the problem??
The iPad 2 and Apple TV 2 both support 5GHz wireless connections.
Does your router support simultaneous 2.4 and 5GHz connections?
While network quality could cause problems, it shouldn't effect such poor performance, to this extent. For example... I have an Xbox 360 running on wireless G, and can play games fine. Does mirroring really surpass a consoles hunger for wireless data? I just feel like there is a way to address the issues. Not by people trying to move around the house, to get a better signal... Why not use Bluetooth + Wireless, to get a better connection / signal?
I'm not talking directly to Drekkerd, but more towards Apple...
If Apple wants to advertise that the iPhone 4S, and iPad 2 can mirror to the TV, then they need to work to address the problem. Period!
Don't say, "You can mirror to your TV"... Oh, and but by the way, "You must have an absolute perfect N network router, for optimal mirroring performance." LOL!
I really hope there is an Update soon, or people are going to be extremely disappointed!
Anyone agree with me?
Yes, certainly.
I have to say, where folks are seeing degraded performance, where ATV only updates after 30 seconds or so, something is clearly wrong.
If this was me, I would try a different Wifi Router just to see if that was the issue ...
It might ... might not ;-) I think its unclear where the true issue is.
What we do know is for Airpay mirroring
Apple will have tested ATV.
Apple will have tested iPad and iPhone
It probably wont have tested your particular TV, model #, software, etc.
It probably wont have tested your Router, firmware, etc.
So you have some unknows there ...
Replacing your current router with an Apple one, at least solves that problem. I'm not suggesting you go out and buy one ... but perhaps if you can borrow one ... at least you would know and can rule out another unknown.
I already have an Apple N Router, and it's still giving me problems... Plus, the AppleTV is connected right next to the Apple router. Ive moved it around, reset the settings, unplugged the power, etc.... Im still lagging! I really think there is a software or tweak, that apple needs to address!!! This does not make any sense...
When the Apple TV is next to the router, are you using an Ethernet connection?
No, I'm just connected over WiFi. Maybe I'll try hooking it up directly. I totally forgot there is an Ethernet plug, on the back of the AppleTV... I'll try it, and post back with an answer. Thx!
Ok, I just plugged my AppleTV directly to my router, and am seeing Much Better Performance!!! Speed-wise Only... The picture still does not look crystal clear, but I'll have to admit, it does look a touch better... So, if you want to see improvement in AirPlay, then you really need to have your AppleTV it connected directly to your modem / router. Thx James, for the hint... LOL! Just forgot that it had an Ethernet port on the back, haha!
BUT, many people do not have the option of directly connecting their AppleTV, since most use it wirelessly. So, to those people, Apple should tweak the performance. It's just not fair. If you can stream a Netflix movie, in 1080p, then why not stream the AirPlay to that same level?
Pro. USE ETHERNET CONNECTION ONLY...
Con. BAD PERFORMANCE WIRELESSLY...
Thanks Guys!
I'm on wifi and it's fine so you don't necessarily need ethernet for good mirroring performance. Regular airplay is not compressed and streams fine. It seems that mirroring is more dependent on LAN speed and will degrade when it needs to.
Issues could be caused by other bandwidth intensive tasks going on.
I've got 2 AppleTV's, and both have the problem. One is next to the router / modem, and the other upstairs connected to Ethernet. The ATV upstairs is working better than the other, sitting close by our wireless router. We do not have much going on, bandwidth-wise... Just 2 AppleTVs, my iPad 2, and my iPhone. That's all! Our connection tested at around 16mbps, which is more than enough, right?
