When my iPad 2 mirrors to my Apple TV 2, it goes to a very poor quality.
Help!!
I have tried changing the default resultion on the Apple TV (Menu & Up for 6 seconds), still to no avail 😟
You got the latest version of iOS on both?
You're running the Apple TV wireless or through Ethernet?
Yes, I have the latest software and I have tried connecting though ethernet, still no good!!

The picture quality is worse then when I hooked up my PC to my TV via VGA cable. So I would expect this quality if I was using a VGA cable, but not a HDMI connection.
Its still early days, but have a look at some apps that offer mirroring as part of the app itself. In some cases they are pushing out full 720p (real racing 2hd for example). There you will see a great picture.
i do believe however that airplay is sending a compressed video/audio stream .. hence it won't look as good as if you connected via a direct cable.
I've noticed the image to be "softer" than a direct connection. However, for video its quite acceptable imo ... a trade-off for "cutting the cord".
Airplay doesn't compress anything. It's mirroring what is on the iPad. So you are seeing the native resolution and video being played from the device. Real Racing has updated to allow for full HD to be pushed out, some video apps push the video to the screen (i.e. you simply see a 'connected to TV message on the iPad) and are in full resolution. Everything else comes down to the app, not the mirroring.
I haven't noticed poor quality due to the mirroring itself.
I tried playing Real Racing 2 via mirroring and it was unplayable because of lag and the picture quality looked like a low bandwith version of a 240p youtube cat video
Also the BBC app's video looked like pork. There must be an issue somewhere...
I thought it could have just been me, but thankfully not!! Out of interest what TV and router do you have?
I have a Belkin G+ wireless router, and was thinking it maybe needed N to have a full HD display?
Any thoughts?
FullHD Philips TV and an Apple Airport Extreme ruoter using the G standard I think (Not N)
The only thing I could think of was the fact that the router is in another room, but then again the signal shows full strenght
I think the problem lies in the inability to define the target resolution

Well I had no lag whatsoever with Real Racing and the resolution was perfect on my system. So it's not the mirroring that's the issue
Haven't used that app, but not all apps will display full resolution
YEa, thats very odd because on my TV, RR2 looks pretty amazing on the TV.
Chopper 2 just got upgraded too to support ATV via Airplay. Also looks awesome.
I am using a Apple Wireless ROuter, although the ATV is acutally connected to the network via CAT5.
Ok... this is by no means meant to be any exhaustive test but this is what I found out.
I started iTunes Wifi sync with the iphone 4s so it was busy transfering data.
I then started chopper 2, via Airplay with ATV. I immediately noticed the picture quality was poorer. There was noticable video compression artifacts on the screen. The picture seemed much softer.
I then stopped the itunes Wifi sync ..
I restarted chopper 2, and noticed a massive improvement in picture quality.
My take away from this is, you need decent wifi bandwith to get the best possible picture from mirroring, so a Wifi-N router maybe desirable.

Airplay might not but mirroring might. it might be rate adaptive to the LAN speed.
I've not unboxed the new iPhone yet so can't comment on display appearance.
This sounds logical. Gotta play with the Wifi settings a bit to see if that helps
