iPad photo sort order changed with iOS 5

The Photos application packaged with iOS 4 always sorted the photos by the "date taken" from the EXIF data.

The Photos application packaged with iOS 5 uses some other sorting scheme. Possibly "none".

Can anyone shed any light, or is this a bona fide bug?

OK so I need to export them to the IPAD directly ?

If I cannot export directly into IPAD then do I need to export to new folder and then sync?

Now I will have two locations with the same photos, one with exif and one without?

No matter how many times I sync pictures to my IPAD they never sort by Date Taken, it is alway by the METADATA DATE from the last adjustment?

Just export them to a folder then put the images wherever you have the ipad set to look for images.

I don't think it's possible to export directly to the ipad but there is no reason to anyway.

Your lightroom library is the primary place for your images and it's where the full resolution images will reside. When you want to put new images on your ipad export them from lightroom at the appropriate size for your ipad (retina vs non-retina) and without exif data. Once the ipad syncs you can delete the files you exported from lightroom as they are on the ipad now. Should you ever need to add them again you can re-export from lightroom.

I believe it is from the last change to the file. Been a while since I worried about it but if I remember correctly if I exported a group of images from lightroom then made a change to one of them in photoshop and re-saved it that would change the order.

Also keep in mind this info may changed with iOS7. I don't think it did but I stopped using the built in camera app once I updated. It's completely useless for me now.

Here is how I get my photos from my Canon camera to my PC then to my iPad 2 running IOS 7.1 sorted in the order I want.

I upload from the SD card to the PC. Delete the ones I don't want. Rename the photos to get them into the order I want.

Using the free PC downloadable program IrfanView I use Batch Conversion. Once IrfanView is up running type the letter b to start the batch program. Open the folder with the JPGs you want. Add them to the batch. Select Batch Conversion - Rename Result files. Under options uncheck Keep Original EXIF Data. This removes the date and gives all the photos the same date. Set the Name Pattern options to begin at 100 increment by 1 (or any other sequence you like). Make your output folder the one you use to upload into the iPad. Don't copy over your originals.

Start Batch

When done connect your iPad and synch your photos.

After much time invested I've concluded that the iPad photo display sorts first by EXIF date and then by name. IrfanView allows you to change the EXIF date tag. If you have already renamed your photos in alphanumeric order then renaming in batch mode may not be necessary.

I think I got IrfanView from Cnet.
