Q: iPad photo sort order changed with iOS 5

The Photos application packaged with iOS 4 always sorted the photos by the "date taken" from the EXIF data.

The Photos application packaged with iOS 5 uses some other sorting scheme.  Possibly "none".

Can anyone shed any light, or is this a bona fide bug?

I managed to persuade my wife to buy an iPad primarily as a photo display device and she has been highly delighted with it. Tonight she upgraded to iOS5 and now the photos are in a different sort order she is apoplectic with rage and now says she would never recommend anyone to buy one for this purpose.

I totally agree with your wife. This photo sorting issue with iOS5 is absolutely ridiculous and it is outrageous that Apple doesn’t do anything to solve it. One of the primary uses of a tablet is to display photos, personally or professionally, and the inability to do so just doesn´t make it worth to buy the iPad. Many people have tried to provide solutions in this Forum, but even if they exist (as complicated as they might be), it doesn’t eliminate the fact that Apple is just being plain stupid about this… or are they? Maybe the whole idea behind this is to force people that have bought and iPad (and who have thus shown their confidence in the product and the brand) to buy a MacBook as well. The key word here is “force”, and it reflects a lack of respect to the customer.

Or maybe the people at Apple don't read this forum, which would make them even more stupid.

ChristofBaer: Your conspiracy theory is cool, but I have Macbook and problem with order of synced photos too :-D. Maybe Apple thought some else but nobody tell us what :-).

Last chance for us will be a new iOS5.1 (maybe tomorrow).

Has anyone tried to see if iOS5.1 fixes this?

I have installed iOS 5.1, and the order is just as chaotic as it had become with iOS 5. I cannot believe it. Or this is absolute carlessness, or cluelessness about what a basic photo app needs, or cynism, I do not know what drives them to mess up a basic but functional photo app.

Shouldn't we just start spamming them until they start to be aware of this useless bug?

Where would be a useful adress to make them listen?

    Cheers

I have the same problem and my hope went away and Apple announced today the iPhoto for iPad. They never will fix the photo sort problem. If you want to organize your library, pay $5,00 and use iPhoto for iPad. Bad move Apple.

I haven't had a look at iPhoto, but does it give the same elegant user interface? I mean like closing and opening galleries with pinching and whatever those finger spreading and closing is called in english?

I have photomanager pro that allows custom sort, but the user interface is cumbersome and much less intuitive than photo app.

    Dammit Apple; I mean: REALLY?

I have basically the same question - where can we make them listen to this?

I live in Europe but I'll be near San Francisco  next week. And when there's no other way I'll just go to the Apple  store and complain about it until someone can credibly show me that they  filed a bug report. Otherwise we might need to organize some street protest when the Media is present on March 16th.

It kind of let's you think that they first made a useable app unuseable and then bring a pay app for 5 bucks and hope that the majority of iPAD users will buy iPhoto which could make them easily 100 million bucks!

I will call the customer support one of these days and confront them with this mess....

I'm going to try the new OS that was released today to see how it handles photo sorting. I'm also going to try out the new iPhoto app.

We have a bunch of iPads that our Sales Reps use to show presentations of our product folders and they HAVE to be in order. So the old way was to name them Alphabetically and also strip out the Meta Data so they all have the same creation date/time. If the Creation Date is the same it goes Alphabetically. Not sure how it works now.

If it now goes Alphabetically I would still strip out the Meta Data to make sure old iOS devices still work and also Apple may revert back to creation date. It is a huge pain but we like using the Photo Viewer because it is cleaner than a powerpoint, it really works good, the sorting just ***** big time!

We'll see how iPhoto works....then again I still would need to have every rep update their iPad 1's and 2's to new OS and buy an App. Not fun. So, in the end I just always have to work around the iPad stock Photo Viewer.

And, don't even get me started on Cached Thumbnails.....

alba63, you hit the nail on the head. Forget using the Photos App and get iPhoto.

After all, you should never expect to get all you need from a basic and free application. If you're serious about any subject, the logical step is to get the appropiate App. After all, nowadays apps are cheap; some years ago, you would have had to pay hundreds of dollars for an app that does what iPhoto does. And if Apple makes a 100 million in the process, well, lets hope they use it to keep develloping cheaper and better hardware and software with Jobbs' vision.

I am going to purchase iPhoto and be done with this ridiculous problem.

.... Then again, iPhoto IS NOT supported by iPad1 (the one I have), and there are reports that it has a poor performance on the iPhone 4S, which would presumably apply to iPad 2 as well.

So, in the end, where back to square one... unless everybody gets "The New iPad".

I'm really ****** at Apple about this.

ChristogBaer quote: "After all, you should never expect to get all you need from a basic and free application"

I don't know what Alba63 need but I need only correct order of my synced photos and nothing more (I am simple man :-D). I thought, that so simple thing fulfill a basic Photo app as well. Why I must pay 4€ for special app if I don't need any special function as are color changes and many others possibilities?

Questions for iPhoto users: is it possible set this app as default photo app ? (due to import photos from Goodreader or iCab browser and etc). How you upload a photo to this app? Via iTunes as on the default Photo App?

    Thanks

CHristof, this misses my main point. It is not whether another app can provide more functionality or not, I will not do photo processing on the iPad, I do this on my PC in photoshop etc., but the photo app of iPad has a very intuitive user interface that is great for showing photos around. Even my 2,5 year old daughter understood how to open galleries using 2 fingers spreading, or closing them. Now, many of my galleries make sense in a chronolocical order, some have 100 photos or more. This used to work! And they have messed it up. No sort order at all makes the app useless. I do not really mind iphoto costs 3,4 or 5 bucks, I may buy it at one point or another, it just does not offer the fluid simplicity of the photo app. Why do they even go on including photo app if it does not do anything any longer except in the most chaotic and unhelpful way? And what with the people who built up big galleries that just worked - even pros - and who are left now with one big mess?

So I just ask whre is Apples highly praised user friendlyness and intuitive strenght?

    Very dissappointed...

Well, as far as I can tell, you can't arrange/hide albums in ipad iPhoto (just bought and installed it). Nor does it arrange in the user selected order as specified on my desktop version of iPhoto.

Once again, not understanding the logic that apple is using to develop the photo functionallity on the iPad.  Obviously they are not people who have to show pictures to people on a regular basis or media professionals.
