iCloud telling me email is taken. The email is my mobileme address. What gives?

I am trying to set up email and Notes back up in iCloud and am required to set up an iCloud email account. I have a .me account already and when I enter this in the prompt on my iPhone4 it says the email is already taken. What can I do about this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dean

I'm entering my mobile me username, without @me.com. It did not appear to allow @me.com to be added. I have an active mobileme account and it seems to have accepted it everywhere except in the mac preferences panel. When clicking on the mail icon in that panel, it asks to enter a username (or create one). When I enter mine, it seems to want to create one and checks to see if it duplicates an existing account (which of course there is, its mine), then it gives me some variants of my name as suggestions. I'd prefer to keep my existing .me account rather than creating another one. I was able to add it to my iphone and ipad in IOS 5.

i,ve spent 2 days on this, doin me head in, and not a fan of ios5 at this point in time. What i have discoverd is that the itunes ID works on all things ipod touch 3g, ipod touch 4g, and iphone4 to download and sync some items. for photostream and notes+email to work you have to use a new me.com email address (even though I have a paid for me.com email address, it does not give an option to sign in using that email address.

I have also dicovered that everything needs to identical for actual syncing. Even then notes don,t sync and email syncs on 2 items but not the others. so now I have what apple call a synced, ipod touch 3g, ipod touch 4g, iphone4, Appe tv, and Mac all syncng with different bits of info on each one. No 2 of them have the exact same info. Mobile me disk space is impossible to access after icloud update, so I don,t know why I am paying for 20gbs of cloud space that I can,t use.

I,m giving up on it at this stage, have searched through millions of forums and other websites etc, and now am completely disgusted with the ios5 operating system. Any good that it may have brought has now been diminished to anabsolute distust of it all and I may never try to resolve it, as I don,t think any update should need this level of customer interaction to get it to work. Microsoft stopped that kind of attitude 3 or 4 upgrades ago. It appears that apples need to have a media event is more important than its cstomers accessing what is in my opinion a BETA release of IOS5 software.

What really irks me is the fact that, as a paid up customer of mobile me, I started to lose bits of info unless I upgraded all the devices at the same time to eventually access Icloud, and then when I do it, I spend days trying to get them all to function together. If I had not had the mobile me account I woud not have needed to upgrade all the devices at the same time.

For the record some of these are purely toys, but the phone and ipod 4g were actually accessing work related information, and now they don,t. Really really annoying.

Incidentally I could not use the paid for mobile me email address and had to create new mobile me email addresses, which I now have cluttering up my email accounts, amd btw it seems the devices are using these email addresses for syncing hence the different information on each one.

I have the same issue.. Icloud created an account using my Apple account...... When I try to turn on the mail featire it says creat an apple an account and when I enter my @me account it says already used creat a new one hua????

I went to Move to transition my @me email account and the steps emmed to work fine BUT when I open iCloud preferences it ONLY shows the apple account ID which is my iTunes account not my email account thus causing major cnfusion.

I wanted to delete the cloud account, and forget it since it is not ready for market, but it says it will delete data and I do not want to risk.

I also no longer get all my data on my iPad since this started. A Major frustration. So much for Apples user friendly tools...

Yeah did all that as you describe, even restored the 2 ipods and set them up as new, but even the programmes on the 2 different ipods are different, like they are 2 completely different devices (which they are of course, just expect them to function exactly the same across the apple range).

I know what you are experiencing. I now have 7 different calendars, and 2 of them are gmail calendars syncing with icloud calendars. All my data is work related and I,m terrified of deleting anything in case I can,t get it back. Really frustrating. I,m not sure if the actual backups have worked or even which backup is the right one at this stage. Icloud has seriously dented my trust in apple. also discovered that the programmes on the different devices act like completely different programmes on each one.

I,m certainly glad I did not attempt to sync them across the wndows computers I use, cos I,m sure that would be just ****.

What is really frustrating is that, it is so many things together, its hard to try to find a solution to all the problems, and of course you have to contemplate losing the data and risk even more so for now I,ll have to carry 3 devices with me at all times and check the 3 of them to see what I,m supposed to be doing.

and don,t even start me on syncing over the air, thats great when it works, but horrendous when it doesn,t.

I,ve 3.8gbs of backup data which means my free 5gbs is almost used up. Oeof the ipods tell me I have 22gbs left, but the mac still says I have only 1.2 gbs. Kinda makes a mockery of the 5gb limit free. Also puts cloud computing back several years when this kind of effort becomes widely known.

iCloud should know, based on a user's login with an Apple ID, if the user has a .me email already.

How? Your MobileMe email address is an Apple ID in its own right. How can Apple connect your MobileMe Apple ID and your iTunes Apple ID without knowing you are the same person?

Asking for an Apple ID when the user already has a MobileMe account is messing everything up.

Not really. Your MobileMe email address is an AppleID and to move MobileMe to iCloud, it is your @me.com AppleID that you should enter, not any different AppleID you have for iTunes.

But iCloud doesn't ASK for MobileMe account if one already exists. It asks for an Apple ID which many people have been using before they even had their MobileMe Apple ID. If I'm wrong, then so many other people wouldn't be having problems.

Why does iCloud assume that everyone's Apple ID must also be everyone's MobileMe ID?

Oct 17, 2011 7:46 AM in response to S.Kay

It doesn't assume anything, but because multiple Apple IDs cannot be merged, you have the choice of setting up a new iCloud account using your existing AppleID and choosing a new @me.com email address, or you can do as recommended here which says:

Using a MobileMe account with iCloud

If you have a MobileMe account (you have an email that ends in @me.com or @mac.com), you should enter your MobileMe email address when prompted for your Apple ID. This will set up MobileMe mail, contacts, calendar, and bookmarks on your device. This is also an important step for moving your MobileMe account to iCloud.

I understand. But, it still doesn't change the fact that iCloud asks for your Apple ID rather than your MobileMe ID if you have one. I understand .me is an Apple ID as well, but that's not what people are using and that's creating a mess.

My iCloud account is what it is now. There doesn't seem to be a way to change it to .me now.

After updating to iOS5, I clicked on all of the "move MobileMe to iCloud" links. It asked for my Apple ID. I typed it in. Big mess now. I'm glad Apple has a lot of "You should of done this instead" help on their site, but it's too late for me.

I am in the exact same position. BTW it does not ask for your me.com ID or email address, it tells you to set up a new me.com email address, then when you sign in with other devices that use your normal apple ID (because it is already in the cache) which in my case was also my itunes ID, and hey presto the whole lot is messed up.

See my blog post here, for a mess http://dublintaxies.blogspot.com/2011/10/apple-icloud-big-fail.html

You have to move your exisitng account. If you try and log in as new then it will think you are trying to set up a new account.

Go to www.me.com/move THEN login to iCloud.

If it doesn't like your account log in first time with @me.com, then try it with @mac.com

If you have created a trial account and logged into iCloud then log OUT before going through the move process with the MM account you want to move.

I did three this weekend without any issue following the above.
