Does anyone have any positive feedback on upgrading iPhone 4 to iOS5? Any feedback appreciated.

I would like to hear some feedback on whether to upgrade now, or wait a week or so before I try.

Your comments are appreciated.

It works great if you don't plan on texting. It totally destroyed my phone. I can't text anymore. I can recieve but not send. I even got a replacement iPhone 4 and it's having the same issue after restoring the backup. Thanks to apple, one can't pick and choose what to restore, in order to eliminate the problem. DONT UPDATE. I'm getting an android. Tired of this. I had a perfectly functioning iPhone a few days ago. Apple had OVER A YEAR to test this, and failed miserably. I'm not surprised at all.

I have nothing but negative feedback. ALL of my emails, contacts and text messages were stored in that phone, and they're still in the backup. The same backup that's screwing it up and causing the texting issues now.

I got an error when trying to upgrade the first 5 or 6 times (code 3200 and 3002), but once the servers were available again I was able to install no problem. From what I've been seeing, just be sure to follow the setup instructions on your iOS device carefully after you upgrade if you have more than one Apple ID. Upgrading may take a longer time than usual because of a new way in which iTunes store purchases are restored.

At the end of the day, I have had a very pleasant experience with iOS 5 so far. 🙂

It took more than 9 hours to complete the update for my iphone 4 32gb. Now I am having problems with the battery lasting, connecting to the internet, updating apps thru the iphone and I am missing some of the apps I had before the update.

I will try syncing again when I get home and hopefully that will fix.

Positive: I really like the notification feature and the access to the phone from the lock screen, though I wish the phone icon stayed on the lock screen and that you did not have to double push the home button to get it to show up.

I had absolutely no problem with my update. After reading all the complaints I did the most logical that I always tend to do with updates. I downloaded the update first. Then once it was complete I then let it install it onto my device. I will say it took about an hour to do the install..30 mins of which the phone looked like it was done but itunes was still spinning reinstalling all my music, apps, vids, and settings without iphone being into a lock mode for sync. I only can tell one thing that I did loose from the update and its technically not gone. I lost a folder of pictures I had. By the way I have iPhone 4.

No real problems here. I was just a bit confused at first, because the iPhone synced my pps back without having the usual "Syncing" screen. That led me to cance the initial restore, which in turn somehow made me lose my app folder arrangement. However, all the apps, settings and data is still there, so I just had to play with iTunes a bit to re-arrange my apps. Did another upgrade on an iPhone 3GS afterwards and didn't touch it until iTunes showed the sync as finished, and it all came through just fine.

I had a effortless download and installation of iOS5...Everything appears to be working after the installation of iOS5 plus new features are working. My only concern is synching of gmail - I assume I have it set up correclty via iCloud but it is taking up to 10 minutes to receive an email sent to my gmail account...google calendars and contacts are synching also...I'm assuming the network is saturated with users (duh!) and slow speeds/synchs are the result as noted elsewhere...

OK. I have successfully upgraded my iPhone AND Lion. Both with problems so...

my recommendations are

  • Backup your system to Time Machine (or similar)
  • If you are using Lion osx update this first (along with iTunes if you haven't already) run it a couple of times as iCal and iPhoto get an updates aswell
  • Do not activate/setup iCloud
  • Confirm all is ok with that upgrade (I ran into problems with iCal and Outlook not snycing with each other as they had previously) - I believe all my Lion syncing problems Outlook calendar, Outlook contacts, iCal and Address book arose because of iCloud

Back up your system again

  • If you have your music compressed at a lower bitrate to fit more on your device as it would not normally fit on it you will encounter a (-34) error. To save yourself alot of time try to remove the amount of music you are going to snyc first time somehow.
  • If you cant change the amount of music, download the upgrade and install (some people were putting the phone into airplane mode but I think this might be a random solution to the 3200 error.) I imagine that as the servers wont be as overloaded as they were last night you probably wont see this verification error.
  • If you do run into problems try restoring to the last backup of your phone.
  • If this still doesn't work activate the phone as a new phone (it should have downloaded all your apps to it anyway) and then do a restore from your previous backup.
  • When you start to set up your phone do not bother with iCloud yet. I would suggest you wait till its fully working (lots of reports that it isn't, including myself)

Leave yourself plenty of time to sort out any problems. I set my update off at about 7pm and went to bed at 12am very frustrated as it still wasn't right. I spent a further hour in the morning trying sort it. Which I eventually did.

Above all remain calm and good luck.

Actually, I just completed uploading my new OS. Everything turned out fine for me. It was a little tricky at first everything is great. Once you complete the download let it upload on the phone. Do Not Touch Anything. It will automatically begin backup of the files on your phone. Next it has uploaded the OS. After that It will begin the restore. This is the tricky part for me. It got hung up and froze for a minute or two. I unplugged the phone and reinserted it and it picked up where it left off. Then I signed in and immediately saw my apps but they didn't work. re-inserted again and it started uploading all my apps, music, artwork, videos etc. Then It was fine. Everything works. BTW don't fall for the so call free mags. They want you to get the subscription.
