Had the same problem and this fix of just pushing on both sides of the speaker with some pressure (not too much to break glass, obviously) WORKED! The "genius" at apple had no idea on how to fix, and since phone is out of warranty just offered to replace for $150. Thank you so much for this trick to fix. Will be getting iphone 5 when it comes out - but this fix should get me to October when iphone 5 comes out. Thanks "im2hot4ya"!
I have tried EVERYTHING...!!! Nothing worked, tried the Q-Tip, blowing into jack, restoring!
ZILCHO!!!!!! NOTTA!!!!!
Then I read your suggestion, was getting VERY desparate, cause my iPhone is the only way I can contact ALL the people I know and I work on call mostly...SCARY not having a phone that works!
So...out of shear desparation, I pressed both sides of the speaker (ear speaker that is)....
VOILA!
Miracles DO HAPPEN, works fine now.
THANK YOU so very much "ZOZ2112".
Seems the simplest things work best!

Aug 20, 2012 10:47 AM in response to ethosworkshopby zppee,Thank you so much. It was so puzzling and distressing not to have my music play through the speaker and and only intermittently through the headphones. The ipod still thought my head phones were plugged in even though they were disconnected. Compressed air and your stickie note/paper clip solution fixed my problem. Now I know what to do if this problem surfaces again: just keep cleaning that little hole until the ipod knows when the head phones are connected and when they are not. Must have been pocket fuzz interfering with the connections.

Sep 9, 2012 1:03 PM in response to Akssakby schlogee,I couldn't get it to work by pressing next to the earpiece as others suggested - but I had a feeling a loose connection was the problem. So I took off the case, and dropped the phone from about 4 inches above the table - fixed it instantly! Funny - I've fixed my Canon camera the same way in the past. If all else fails slam it around some!

Oct 11, 2012 11:18 AM in response to Akssakby Cdaamn,I rolled up a thin bit of toilet paper that was quite long (about 2 inches) and pushed it in. Then used a small screwdriver to gently push more in so it layered up. Left for a few minutes and it was fixed.

Jan 21, 2013 1:06 AM in response to Ailithby MrAndyC75,I've read a number of fixes for this speaker/headphone issue this morning after my speaker just stopped working; no drop on the floor, no water, just stopped. Ailith, your solution worked straight away for me! Thank you so much.
To recap: I have an iPhone 4S about 10 months old.
1. Speaker wasn't playing sounds from messages, incoming calls etc etc.
2. Headphone socket worked fine and could hear music and sounds through headphones.
3. Volume buttons adjusted volume but automatically defaulted to Headphone Volume as though the phone thought it had headphones in...when it hadn't.
Solved by...
1. Rang voicemail and switched to speaker
2. I could hear the voicemail lady perfectly through the speaker...I thought this was strange.
3. Switched mute button TO mute.
4. Hung up.
5. Played some music and there it was...my speaker worked again.
6. Slid mute button back to UNMUTE and phone seems to be working perfectly.
I have to say...this is the inly problem I have ever encountered with any iPhone. Hopefully it will stay fixed!!
Thanks again, Ailith.

Feb 24, 2013 10:06 PM in response to ethosworkshopby tondofear, tnx your solution really works! thumbs up!
there is an aftermarket accessory available that can be put in the jack terminal to avoid the dirt or some small foriegn objects get inside of it. it helps!

Apr 2, 2013 2:17 PM in response to Akssakby Poboxevans,After reading the posts on here and none of the solutions worked, while holding a strong magnet on the ear speaker I flicked it while holding it face side down and found it had collected a small piece of metal. It's working again!

Apr 22, 2013 1:51 PM in response to Akssakby SC-AppleHelp,All of the various suggestions have merit, including switching the "Silence" switch back and forth, but they didn't solve my particular problem. [By the way, I would highly recommend that you do a full Power-Down before poking around in the headphone jack or in the bottom Main port.]
It turned out on my phone that "pocket fuzz" was preventing the Silence switch from moving ALL the way back and forth (The rectangular slide switch on the side, and above the volume buttons).
I took a sharp needle and gently scrapped around the switch, moved the switch to the other position and scrapped around it again, then blew out the loose junk with a compressed air can. Moved the switch back and forth a couple of times - and now the ear speaker works again.
Thanks to all for the various solutions - you got me to try one more thing. I guess it depends on where your pocket lint lands and packs in. Be gentle with your valuable phone, and Good Luck.
