my iphoto one day had was grey and had a circle with a line through it covering the iphoto logo. i clicked it and it said there was an error. then the next time it wasnt on my dock, i checked in finder and it was no where to be found

If you've checked on your hard drive for iPhoto.app and it's not there you will have to reinstall it from the disks that it came on originally. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/ folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally, go to the Apple Downloads, search for "iPhoto 9", download and apply the appropriate updaters.
