I connected my iphone to update it with the iOS5 and it said it created a backup before updating it, but when I clicked Restore most of my photos where gone. I only had my first 20 photos out of almost 300. How can I recover them? I checked iPhoto but they weren't there!!

I have the same problem. All of my camera roll pictures are gone after updating my iPhone 4 to iOS 5. The workaround using iExplorer that is discussed in other threads does not work for me because the files that they say to delete are not there. Any advice, Apple?
Same for me, its weird tho, because the pic for the background isnt in the camera roll, but its still the background, i cant find the photo anywhere on the phone, and contact pictures are still setup but nowhere to be found within the phone, its like the photo's are still on the phone but no where to be found

Same thing happened to me but I also lost my pics in iPhoto! The thumbnails are surrounded by dashes and then when you click on them, you get an exclamation point. I have opened a backup copy and restored from that. Not sure if I want to turn on streaming as I think that may have damaged my files.

did you lose the pictures on iPhoto as well? If not, just connect to iTunes, right click on your IOS device and then click on restore from backup and make sure its the backup you used before installing IOS 5. I went in and deleted the others. The system software will remain on the device
Because I lost all of my Apps when I initially downloaded iOS 5 on to my iPad I did a complete restore! Do you know where the camera roll could be? I regret starting with this whole download-it has been nothing but aggravation and frustration -oh and not to mention that I lost half of my iTunes on my desktop during all of this!

Guys...i just found thje solution:
the solution is:
1. open your itunes on your pc
2. Right Click on your iDevice
3. Click on Restore from Backup
4.After the restore finishes your iDevice will startup again
5. Follow the instructions on your iDevice
6. Make sure you enable iClouds
7. Start using your iDevice
8. CHeck your Pictures, Videos, Contacts, etc
9. You're done !!

It looks like the backup didn't finished backing up correctly because my photos weren't transfered to iPhoto
I am having a similar problem i have updated to ios5 and i have lost all my photo. I have just come back from holiday in florida and i have lost all my pictures. I have not got a back up since i got home and i now have no holiday pics. Is there a way to find them or are they gone forever?
