Hi, my iphone 4 was working fine a couple of days ago, but suddenly i plugged the device to my laptop and after a while i realized it wasnt charging, i have tested on a lot of computers but i got the same issue, even on a mac but its not detected.

So finally i turned off and after a while i realized the phone was fully charged, at least i found a temporary solution to this problem but its really anoying to switch off to charge the phoen, if you solve this problem please let us know, apple should fix this problem.

I am also going through a similar problem with my 32Gb iPhone 4, though syncing via wifi isn't affected, but it's still a bother to switch off the phone every time I need to charge it.

Found out that the phone would charge normally when the car charger is used though, so if you have one and need a temporary measure to bypass this ongoing situation this might be of some use. Still looking for a definite fix as yet.. 😕

I had the same problem and finally got it solved. It turned out to not be a software problem. There is a power control chip inside that handles the charging functions and that part became defective. It was covered under warranty and I got a replacement phone. If you still have warranty covereage, get your phone replaced otherwise you might as well try to sell it on ebay where you can get 150-200 for it. Apparently this is a fairly common problem.

I would expect it to be fairly easy to repair. There is a power management IC that needs to be removed and replaced. The hardest thing would be to take the phone apart and desolder the defective part without messing up something else. It's basic electronics, so there should be places who can repair it. Sorry, I don't have an idea what a repair place would charge though. If I had to take a guess, I'd say $200 and that's just a guess on what the labor would be for 1.5 hours of work and test. The replacement part cost well under $1.

Ok so I found out that as long as you have the old bulky charging wire the one with the tabs one the side where you have to push them to unplug them from the phone. If you have this wire and then you have iTunes running on your computer, you have to keep squeezing the side tabs of the sync cable and insert and remove the sync cable constantly until the charge catches, this way you can charge, update, backup and restore your older iPhone 4.
