I'm editing OCR-read text for a website and I can almost do it in the iOS 5 version of Safari on the iPad 2. The only problem is that I can't produce a line break. Pressing Shift Return gives me a line break in Safari on the Mac, but on the iPad I just get a normal paragraph. Any suggestions?

I was confused as well. But by accident I found out.
Just tap and hold at the position where you want the line break. In the popup tap the "right" button > and then "Insert…". Then you can choose a tab, a line break, a page break or a column break. Even a foot note.
Pretty nifty and obvious ONCE you know how it's done.
This is so easy – once you know. It's hard to find if you don't.
Above he on-screen keyboard, on the right, there' same plus sign. Tap and you get your choice of line break, page break etc.
Easy, right? Once you know.
Discovery really could be easier.

Did they take this out with iOS7? Using Pages and trying to insert a soft return using the tap and hold method but the menu does not offer an "insert" option. Just "Select, Select All, Highlight or Comment." Shift-enter doesn't work either.
Am I missing something?
Have you had any luck? I'm using the App called "Pages" on the iPad, and it's driving me nuts not being able to do a shift return.
No, sorry, I've just accepted that it's one of the things the iPad can't do. I tried creating a soft return on the Mac and then copying it across to the iPad, but both Safari and Pages just changed it into a paragraph break. This convinced me that it just wasn't going to happen.
Now if I want to edit on the move, I take a netbook with me. It's a tatty old thing that I got for free and the screen keeps freezing and I can only do 4 pages of text before the battery dies—but it does the job.

My problem is in Pages on an iPad.
I've edited the formatting for that section, so there is no para spacing before or after.
So if I hit return, this workaround effectively looks the same as a shift + return.
But it would be better if it the program allowed shift+return.
