Q: iOS 5 AVRCP is it version 1.3?

Does the final iOS 5 for iPhone and iPad have Bluetooth AVRCP 1.3 support?  Supposedly the betas have/had it.  I have a Kenwood DDX418 car stereo that according to the owner's manual supports AVRCP 1.3 that enables showing tag info like artist, song, album info.  I have my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 updated to iOS 5 but the song info doesn't seem to be tranmitting so I'm wondering if the AVRCP is still at 1.0.  Thanks.

I don't believe that its an Apple issue.  The 2010 CX-9 is able to show metadata from an iphone with either iOS5 or iOS6.  I still think the problem is with either the Mazda bluetooth module or the audio system itself.

The 2012 CX-9 shows metadat from a Macbook, so the interface betweent he bluetooth module and display seems to be OK.

We know the head unit changed from 2010 - the display no longer shows the rearview parking lines.

Hey fellow Mazda 3 Owners read this forum and the one that Dereck linked to on Mazda3revolution then decided to follow the link in this thread to mazda's bluetooth compatability site and found this for my 2012 Mazda 3 i Touring with SkyActiv.

    http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/displayPage.action?pageParameter=bluetooth

It shows bluetooth audio but no metadata interestingly enough it says that the HUD will also show battery level, signal, and roaming in addition to caller id.

    http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/displayPage.action?pageParameter=bluetooth

Now this was the compatability table for the 2013 Mazda 3 i Touring and under Bluetooth it shows that it will display the song info.  So very weird and my manual shows that AVRCP 1.3 is supported as long as you a compatible device.

Interesting. I just saw your post. I don't see any of those indicators on my 2012 i GT .

Yeah was super sad I guess it's because the iPhone 5 supports AVRCP 1.4 and our models only support up to 1.3 so it obviously has to be a backwards compatibality issue which seems stupid!

Wish there was a way for us to update our BT modules in our cars.

I tweeted @mringwal about this issue. He is the developer of the BTstack tweak in Cydia. I asked if he thought about adding AVRCP 1.3 support and linked him to this thread. Maybe if others ask for it he will add it.

For fun, I decided to contact these guys: http://www.jciblueconnect.com/index.php?page=about

Someone in this thread (blarnson I think) said the bluetooth module is a Johnson Controls module. The content on that site appears similar to the Mazda Hands Free site so I think that's the technology that is used.

It would be cool if they had a firmware update for these modules that would support AVRCP 1.4. I'll keep you guys updated on what they say (if they respond).

The only Mazda people maybe, but I saw this 64 page thread about issues with other head units: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4313768.

Other manufacturers were releasing firmware updates.

I really don't think it's an issue with the Mazda BT module, form some testing I've been doing, it's an issue with the head unit and its inability to read the metadata stream it's receiving from the BT module.

The Metadata works fine in our friends 2010 CX9.  Their head unit has different firmware than ours and was provided by a different supplier as evidenced by their display of the rear camera parking lines which the 2012 doesn't have.

We've swapped BT modules between the cars and theirs continues to show the metadata while ours doesn't. Additionally, our car does show the metadata when using BT streaming on iTunes using a MaC laptop.

That said,  since we've proven that the 2012 is capable of displaying the metadata, I would think that a tweak in the iPhones BT stack to make it function like any of the other phones out there, or a Mac, is the only solution at this point.

Yeah, I remember your tests. I just figured it was worth a shot contacting them. Maybe they have a useful response. I wonder who the manufacturer is of the Mazda OEM headunits? Maybe they have a firmware update?

I just found this support article from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4483

I just contacted Mazda via their website, mazdahandsfree.com and referenced that article and this thread. It would be nice if they would offer a firmware update. I'm kind of annoyed that my 1 yr old car doesn't support this feature.

I just got this response from Johnson Blue Connect:

    Derek,

Thank you for contacting us in regards to your HandsFree system.

The displaying of song information (metadata) is not a tested feature in this vehicle, so we do not have a list of phones that will work for this.  However, we have found that it seems that only phones with exactly AVRCP 1.3 are able to display the metadata.  As you also stated, iPhones with iOS 5 and above use AVRCP 1.4, so they will likey not display the metadata.  At this time, we have not been informed of any upcoming updates for the HandsFree system in your vehicle that would change the way the metadata functions.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

If you have any additional questions or comments, please feel free to contact us at 800-430-0153. We are available Mon-Fri from 7:00am-8:00pm CT.

    Sincerely,

    Mazda HandsFree Customer Service

Notice they seem to write on behalf of "Mazda HandsFree Customer Service". I'm guessing they also got the message I submitted on http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/displayPage.action?pageParameter=bluetooth. They probably support the product on Mazda's behalf. I guess we're out of luck .
