iOS 5 AVRCP is it version 1.3?

Yes, on my Prius the iOS5.0 update to my iPhone 4 added the ability to see: track number, track elapsed time, track title, artist, and album. Finally.

I am eager to try this out. Bluetooth usually works for me, but I have issues with the USB connection from time to time... Works great for days, weeks, or months, then won't work, then works, then...

Unless they change it for the iPhone 4S, Toyota states that the Prius is not compatible with the iPhone. I have been dealing with "issues" over three models of Prius (2005, 2007 and now a 2010) and Toyota has even replaced my navigation system twice as well as USB connectors trying to "fix" something that the documentation says isn't supported. I still run in to issues, though it sometimes work, and bluetooth audio streaming works as well.

But officially, Toyota says the iPhone is not supported in the Prius.

My personal experience marrying the iPhone and the Prius (2010 in my case) has been that the USB connection is untenable, but the bluetooth connection (available with NAV package, I believe) works quite well (actually has gotten better over time).

USB: While it will power the phone, it immediately locks you out of the Music (a.k.a. iPod) app and thus you can only control it by the car stereo system. But this system works on the "virutal folder" model such that every artist is a folder, every genre, etc. and it takes forever to transmit this. And it's not cached. Browsing for music is effectively impossible. At first I blamed the phone, but when I upgraded from 3G to 4, I only noticed what I felt to be a slight improvement. I would like to be able to charge without transmitting data (locking the phone), maybe there is some kind of USB-power-only adapter I could use?

Bluetooth: You can control everything by the familiar iPhone screens. You can't charge as you'll be locked out (see above). In theory the sound quality is worse--that's what some people claim, but I've never seen the specs, and can't hear a difference in a Prius (I consider myself an audiophile and can clearly hear the difference between 128kbps, 256 kbps and CD-original). You can also browse for music using Siri and pre-Siri voice commands "play album all this useless beauty", "genius", "play songs by elvis costello", etc. This is a great advantage when actually driving solo. As for battery life, playing music over bluetooth seems to diminish the battery charge by only a few percentage points over an hour. Lastly, the steering wheel buttons and car touch screen versions work well too. (Though the originally were useless).

And I'll add a bit more... In BLuetooth mode, you can play podcasts at 2X, which is not availalbe when using USB.

Also, there are two Bluetooth pairing points in the Prius. One is for the audio, and the other is for "everything else" like the phone/address book. I currently have mine set to link only the phone part via Bluetooth, and audio turned off, since it would always choose Bluetooth over USB when I would plug the phone up, requiring me to switch the phone to iPod Dock connector every time I wanted to use it in the car. Annoying but understandable.

Allen, you can use the car screen controls to switch between bluetooth and USB. To me it seems the car chooses whatever connection is most recent.

But yes, I neglected to mention how much I like this feature--I can keep the iphone in my pocket the whole time, start the car and music continues where it left off (or at the beginning of the song if it's been a(n undefined) long time since you played music--smart Apple!). So the whole experience is quite seamless. My only problem in this respect is when the wife drives my Prius--she gets my music blasted at her from the garage until she drives out of bluetooth range!

Curious if anyone has ever received an official response on the AVRCP version number question? I just purchased a 2012 Mazda 3 and after pairing with my iPhone 4 it played a little bit of a song, once, and have had no luck since with controlling anything on the iPhone from the HU. Display on dash only shows BT Audio, no track info 😟 Phone calls work great however, and so far very good quality and reliable connections.

On some of the Mazda forums, there have been numerous users complaining that the AVRCP 1.3 is not working with iOS5. I've got a 2012 Mazda5 and I'm also not getting the metadata. However, people have had success with other phones (Android), as well as the MacBookPro, which I confirmed myself. Given that, along with complaints that people with other types of cars have had issues with the AVRCP 1.3 streaming tell me this is a problem with the implementation in iOS5, not the Mazda.

I'd love for an Apple engineer to take a look and see if they somehow screwed up the implementation.

I have a JVC head unit (ADV794) in my 2010 mazda 3, and I also can't get the metadata on the display with my iPhone 4 w/ iOS 5.0.1.

Just like everyone else has stated... why can we get this on other phones (i.e. Android based) and not the iPhone? Once my phone contract has ended I'll be seriously looking into the other options - this is a basic feature Apple!

...and to think I was beginning to lean towards Apple from my current PC/Windows use... HA!

I just bought a 2012 Mazda 3 (which advertises AVRCP 1.3 support) and noticed that song information is not displayed when I use my iPhone 4S (IOS 5.0.1). I tried it with my HP Touchpad (running Android / CM 7.3) and it works fine. I hope Apple fixes this soon...

I'm in the same boat, 2012 Mazda3. The songs play from my phone but no track info. Also can't upload contacts but that's another issue Mazda is having with apple! Hopefully they both get fixed soon.

Purchased a 2012 Touring with the Bose package. IPhone IOS5 Bluetooth streaming works fine, but no song info in the display, which, according to the manual, it should show this info. Did a comparison with our friend's 2010 CX-9 which displays the song data, we also notice that the rear view camera shows reference lines on the display to assist in backing up. Our car doesn't have these lines, nor are they included in the manual as a feature.

This definitely indicates some sort of firmware delta between the 2010 and 2012 CX-9s for the information display.

Definitely not a problem with the IPhone since my phone displayed the song data in their car and their phone did not show the data in my car.

Spoke with the dealer about this. According to them, in mid 2011 after the Japan Tsunami, any new CX-9s did not have the rear view reference lines. I have a feeling that Mazda changed suppliers and the new suppliers did not implement (or partially implemented) the AVRCP 1.3 BT protocol.

Since our manual indicates that our car should support the BT song info on the display, I've raised the issue with Mazda Customer Care who is working with our dealer to identify the issue. I should also mention that the Service Mgr at our dealer is working with the company that maintains the Mazda audio units to figure out what's going on. I'm getting calls every few hours from both the Service Mgr and CC asking questions to help in their investigation, so Ii know their working on it.

I also contacted Mazda's NA Operations, Office of the President, about this issue and their are also aware of it.

Interesting... Let us know how you make out. It seems odd that the AVRCP 1.3 support works when I use an Android device but not the iPhone 4s. The iPhone apparently supports AVRCP 1.4... Maybe that is not backwards compatible with 1.3? Perhaps the 2010 CX-9 supported 1.4 and our 3s only support 1.3. Hmm...

I'm driving both a 2012 Mazda6 and a 2012 Smart fortwo and they are supposed to support song metadata and as many people it doesn't work.

Hopefully, Blarnson work will help me in one of my issue !!!

I'm in the same boat. I just got a 2012 Mazda3 and the Bluetooth works great as far as the songs playing and answering calls from my phone. All i see is BT Audi on the screen, no song info. Also I added some numbers to the vehicles Phonebook & it didn't work to make a call. I'm not sure if anyone else is having trouble dialing from the vehicle, not the phone, of maybe I just did it incorrectly.
