Q: Post Dithering Volume Changes?

I'm mastering a friends project using Ozone.

Naturally I'm dithering his 24bit files.

We'll make the final CD w/ Waveburner.

But it occurred to me that he may wish to do some volume alterations in Waveburner.

(Possible fades, or ocassonal evening out the tunes from track to track)

Is this a "no-no" as far as the dithered files go?

Any opinions on Ozones MBIT+ vs Logic's POW-r?

thanks

Ken

As it seems, you're in the lucky situation to have 24bit source files. If possible, you should use them in Waveburner and make your volume adjustements there. This way you save all information contained in the audio. Dithering 24 bit files to 16 bit and use them in WB doesn't make sense, since you'll make cross fades, etc. During the cross fades, the dithering will be changed. It's not like that you'll screw the audio, but it's simply not optimal.

MBIT vs. POW-r, that's a great question. To my ears, plain dithering like pow-r #1 sounds better than the noise shaping variants #2 and #3, which are overly aggressive in the treble region, although the yield more system dynamic in the mid range. You need to try out, which fits best.

    Thanks DaCaptain-

I probably should've known that, but I mostly only master/dither single songs.

So in that regard, this project (Making a full CD) is a bit new to me.

I'll have to do a little reading up on Waveburner.

    Thanks again
