I want to save to my desktop where did all of my docs go?

I have been utterly "confused" since downloading "Lion" Everything from my desktop is missing. The documents from the Desktop Folder are missing. I like saving documents to my desktop, can I still do that? Things are saved in all sorts of weird places! I have ? marks in my tool bars. I'm very frustrated.
