itunes does not see iphone

I had issues with iTunes not 'seeing' my iPhone. I did the MSConfig reboot. Tried to uninstall and reinstall iTunes, reinstalled the drivers, and then, finally, iTunes saw my iPhone. I downloaded iOS5 to install it on the iPhone, seemed to be working OK. Since the instal process mentionend that it would take about an hour, I went to bed. The next morning, the phone was still on 'plug into iTunes' mode and iTune was blind to it again...

Since then, I'm trying all that I can find but nothnig does it. I'm stuck with my iPhone that I cannot use, can't sync and can't recover...

HELP!!!

iPhone 4, Windows XP Pro, SP3

Thanks. Tried all that. When I reinstall the driver, I get a message that the hardware cannot be installed.

I have 2 'Apple Mobile Device USB Driver's that show up in my Universal Serial BUS Controllers. One that seems to be fine, and one with a yellow exclamation point. Something's wrong; I just don't know what. I tried deleting one of them. I then get the 'Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)' error in the Universal Serial BUS Controllers. I tried to reinstall the driver automatically -> doesn't work. Tried to point to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers -> I get a message that the system can't find the sftware. I don't want to download from God-knows-where so I'm still stuck.

Any suggestions?
