updated to ios5 and airprint for windows doesn't work anymore. iPhone with ios4 still prints, but iPad with ios5 doesn't find printer. thought upgrade meant 'better functionality', but was mistaken.

Thanks for the response guard0g. I got it sorted!

The problem was that after you delete a service, it actually isn't deleted, it is only marked for deletion and finally deleted on windows restart.

This meant that when I deleted the old service as described above, the installing of a new airprint service wouldnt work as I hadn't rebooted before installing.

May be of help to someone else in the future though - so make sure to reboot after removing the old service, and before installing the new one, worked first time for me.

When you create a service, it often runs with SYSTEM or NT

AUTHORITY\<BuiltInAccount> privileges so that it starts up properly.

What you might need to do, if not set already, is to open

services.msc, click on the LogOn tab, click the Log on as Local System

account bullet and set the Allow Service to Interact With Desktop

check box. See if that works.

Hi iPhone

thanks for that advice, i tried that and checked the box. the main screen tab general states that the service is stopped. i clicked the logOn tab and checked the box but no difference, still coming up as system failure 1053. i even went to the bonjour service in services.msc and repeated the check box there also but still same issue

?any further suggestions,

and Happy New Year

Msm786, perhaps the reason you get the 'start service failed 1053' error is because you did not point to the right location of the airprint.exe file in your sc.exe create command. For me, Airprint was installed in my 'Program Files (x86)' directory rather than 'Progesm Files' directory. Check to make sure where Airprint.exe is located and change the sc.exe create command.

Good luck.

Was about ready to give up when I realized I should try power down the Ipad and restarting-now it works. The second Ipad wouldnt show the printer until after the reboot.Maybe this is obvious to others but considering I rebooted the PC a dozen times and the printer nearly that many I thought it worth mentioning. Thanks Gulmon for a great post

So I got tired of hacking around and ended up spending $10 on FingerPrint from Collobos software. http://www.collobos.com/index.html

It is just a little app that runs on a PC or Mac that takes any printer the PC or Mac can print to and makes it available for AirPrint on ios5 devices. No hacks required. It works great on my ios 5.0.1 3GS and iPad2.

Cheaper than a new printer, more secure than setting up a guest account, and quicker.

Collobos Fingerprint may be helpful for some, but keep in mind it does not run as a service on Windows.

This means

1. The PC must be left logged on to a user account (not just powered on to the welcome screen)

2. If there are multiple user accounts on the PC, EACH must be set up to run Fingerprint on login.

Like I said, this may not be a big deal for some. Also, the good news is the Dev's just tweeted that a version running as a service just entered beta.

Good news on my problem from above. Turns out that windows 7 firewall was blocking AirPrint even though all indications were that it wasn't ( AirPrint was on the list of allowed programs). I followed the tips in this post and allowed port 631 to pass through and my printer was immediately visible on my iPhone 4s.

Interestingly, apparently the Guest account only has to be active when the AirPrint service is started. After the service starts, I can disable the Guest account and continue printing. No substitute for having real userid / password authentication in place (like iOS 4 did) but better than leaving Guest active all the time.
