So the issue is a complete misunderstanding of how syncing works.

Once the content is synced to the device, unselecting it to sync will REMOVE it from the device. It simply is not possible to sync content to the device, stop syncing it but have it remain on the device. iDevices are NOT storage devices, they are mirrors of what is on the computer.

As for where the backup of your data is, only you can answer that. Have you done a backup? IF so, where did you back it up to?

I can't speak for the others, but all of the photos I was talking about were taken (and stored) on the iphone.

The backup data was deleted by itunes. Each time the phone is plugged in it seems to create a new backup- which is great, except it deletes the old back up, making it pretty much useless as far as I can tell.( when you try to backup your device you can only back it up to its settings 10 seconds earlier - ie current) ( Also please correct me if there is a better expination of this I would like to know more about why/how that feature is supposed to work)

Also, it is possible to use a system restore to restore the device settings - so long as you created a system restore point ( ie restarting the computer) between creating the itunes device back up and updating to iOS5.

I am having the same issue....

My phone synced everything over prior to updating with the new IOS5. Where the heck have my pictures gone?

It makes no sense to me that the pictures are there one second and then gone the next.

I downloaded the iphone folders program however I am on itunes 10.5 and it only works on 8 or 9 from what I can tell.

Someone please help...

Please provide straight forward answers, not run around one's please.

Hi everyone who has lost photos etc when upgrading to iOS5, I have found a solution worth trying.

Go to:http://www.iphonebackupextractor.com/

This is a freeware backup extractor that searchs for old backups on your computer. It found some old backups of my wifes phone that did not register in itunes after the upgrade. Using the Expert mode, you need to select the older backups and then it opens the folders like windows explorer. Find the Media folder, then DCIM and then 100Apple. This folder contained all the photos on her iphone. The freeware version only allows you to extract 2 at a time. If you are very thankful then you could but the full version and extract all at once. I did not do it for contacts etc but I am sure they are also there.

Please note that the phots were still there even though it showed nothing in itunes under photos, nothing in the camera roll and also after spending 30 minutes on the phone to Apple technical people, who claimed they had not heard there was a problem.

Dear Apple, I hope you learn a very valuable lesson from this. As soon as this bug was detected you should have stopped the prompting to upgrade until the solution was found. Your reputation is worth protecting.

So I did the backup and restore on my phone and it worked out fine (because I keep my account up-to-date as best as possible). Unfortunately, my roommate had not restored/backed-up/updated her phone since August. She has MOST of her photos but not all - there are photos that were taken as early as say - yesterday - that she desperately wants because it was her sons 1st birthday. I'm not sure which thing to try that you guys have suggested the IE folder, the IE extract, or the iCloud. Like I said - she hasn't backed up her phone in a while. Please help so I can make her a very happy mama!

And Now I'm trying to back up her iCloud and it isn't properly backing up because there is an error. ALSO - She lost some very important text messages from August till now (And these are VERY pertinent to some legal things going on.) *** was apple thinking? I'm starting to get super tired of this. I don't care about my stuff - but hers is massively important.
