Found this solution on another question board on this site - by ab70. It completely worked. Download iExplorer - it lets you look at your iPhone files like a flash drive. The pictures have just been moved to another folder: DCIM/100Apple

After MUCH crying, and a completely UNHELPFUL apple technician over the phone - this found my photos! Pass it on!!

I just updated my iphone to ios5 and was horrified to see that all my pictures were lost. They had all been downloaded to iphoto on my macbook pro before I updated to ios5, but they were no longer on my iphone.

I did a couple of things, and my pics showed up - it takes a few minutes for them all to show. First I went to settings on my phone and signed into icloud and then my pics started showing up in "events" in Photos on the phone, but the Photo's file was disorganized, and manyof the pictures were black. So, I turned off (powered off) my phone, and when I powered it back on, voila! the pics were in camera roll in Photos.

No, there are actually many scenarios where someone might be something other than a fool and yet still have this happen to them. Someone might be technologically unsaavy, for example, but be a brilliant writer or musician or just an overall kindhearted, loving person. Someone might have been too busy to copy their pictures, or think they did copy them when they didn't...in any case the person wouldn't necessarily have to be a fool. A much more certain definition of a fool would be someone who wastes their precious, irrecoverable hours of life loitering the Apple forums seeking opportunities to make anonymous, smug, insulting statements about things which don't concern them in the slightest. Do yourself a favor, don't waste your life.

I just updated 3gs with ios5, using a pc. Photos and videos are not showing up in camera roll, In tunes the capacity bar of colors showed nothing in video or photo, but lots of memory in yello part of bar named other. I suspected that this was all my photos and videos.

Downloaded this windows browser, worked for me.

http://iphonefolders.com/

It opens iphone like windows explorer.

The pics and videos were located in DCIM folder.

Got back pics and videos.

Hope this works for anyone else.

AFter several attempts to backup and upgrade my iPhone 4 with the new OS i lost all of the pictures and game scores. I had to reinstall music files but I can't find the missing pictures,

I installed iexplorer but the only pics in the 100Apple folder are pics sent since the OS change.

THe missing pics are sentimental only but I would love to find them hidden in a cloud or anywhere

Any more ideas

THanks

I am having the same problem. I backed up the device before updating, however the back-up file was over written after updating! What is the point of having back-ups if itunes automatically writes over them? Is there any way to turn that functionality off so that back-ups could potnetially be usefull? I tried power cycling the phone as recomended with no luck. Will try iExplorerer next.

I had this same problem. I looked in Settings > General > About and it said I had nearly 530 photos, only about 150 of which were actually showing up in the Photos app. Most of them were under the "events" tab. I simply signed into iCloud and turned on the photo stream. Once that was done, I power cycled my iPhone and all of my photos "magically" appeared in the Photos app, all in the correct order and everything! Chances are, I didn't even need to power cycle my iPhone, as a simple restart usually fixes most problems with iDevices. Hope this helps bud!
