Q: Solution: iTunes 10.5 using 100% CPU / Not backing up your iPhone.

This solution has been documented on this forum by several people, but the solution is usually deep in multiple threads.  I really don't know who came up with it first, but it does indeed work.

I had an issue with iTunes.exe, APSDaemon, and AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe using 100% CPU per core.  (Showed as 25% in Task Manager.)

I could not backup my iPhone and the CPU spike happened as soon as iTunes 10.5 was started on Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

This solved it.

Sounds stupid but works:

1. Quit iTunes.

2. Start an elevated command prompt (Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right Click "Command Prompt" -> "Run as Administrator")

3. Once in the command prompt, type "netsh winsock reset" and hit ENTER.

4. Reboot your machine.

5. Restart iTunes.

6. ???

7. Profit!

Not my solution, so I can't really take thanks.  Just trying to help people find it easier. :-)  But yeah, seems to always work for this particular issue.

My god, I wasted 3 evenings on finding a solution, my iPhone kept backing up for hours and hours, no connection to iTunes Store whatsoever... And now it's updating as if it's nothing. This works like a charm.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

Just curious, but did this affect anyone's firewall/antivirus programs?  It says on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259 that

"Warning Programs that access or monitor the Internet such as antivirus, firewall, or proxy clients may be negatively affected when you run the netsh winsock reset command. If you have a program that no longer functions correctly after you use this resolution, reinstall the program to restore functionality."

I don't know that much about the command prompt and was just wondering if this is the best solution.

    Thanks!

unfortunately this hasn't worked for me either. i'm running windows 7 and trying to upgrade my iphone 4 to iOS 5.  i've tried deleting old backups and doing the netsh command. the backing up status bar is EXTREMELY slow.

anybody know anything else that might work? apple should really do something about this ASAP, i've spent several evenings trying to get this to work with no luck

The netsh winsock reset resolved both the problem of AppleMobileDeviceService.exe using 100% of my CPU and the blank iTunes blank store issue.

XP Pro user here that had gone through the detailed step-by-step process of uninstalling iTunes as described on the support page but both problems still existed.

    Glad I saw this. Thanks.

    Now on to :

          7. Profit!

For me initially after update to OS10.5, noticed whole PC VERY slow. And

AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe runs at 50% and itunes run at 49%......

Hardly can move my mouse. don't talk about backup or transfer my ipad's purchase.

    After executing the above instruction.

AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe runs at 0~8% and itunes run at 2~14%......

WOOHOO.. now on the way to update ipad to OS5.

Thanks GUYS, to the one that post this solution and to everyone that SHARE this solution...

What is the OS of your computer...XP ? Vista ? Windows 7 ?

I have not heard from anyone on Vista saying it is solved for them and I am hoping to find one such person as Apple seems to have no clue on why those two processes/exes are consuming 100% of the CPU.

Well unfortunately this didn't work for me but what DID work was simply hitting Restore. You must backup when doing this (it will ask, and then subsequently ask to restore from your recent backup). iTunes restores your whole iPhone, but with ios 5, and then implements your latest backup so everything is just dandy. No loss of contacts or anything like that. Hope this helps other users who are still having issues after trying the netsh winsock reset process.
