"contacts have been disabled on iPhone"

I am getting this message: "ITunes cannot sync contacts to the iPhone because contacts have been disabled on iPhone" - I don't know how this happened, but I cannot synch with my iTunes because of it. I don't care so much about synching contacts, but I do care about iTunes. Can anyone tell me how to correct this? I am a new iPhone user and old Mac user.
