Q: APSDaemon.exe error

Greetings,

ever since I installed iTunes 10.5 on my Windows 7 32 bit PC I get the following error every time iTunes starts.

APSDaemon.exe. The instruction at 0x5eebcfe3 referenced memory at 0x00000004. The memory could not be read.

I click OK, iTunes seems to work ok but I would prefer not to get the error. I've upgraded my ios devices to ios 5, but the error comes up as soon as iTunes starts.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

The user shouldn't HAVE to do anything to fix the problem. Apple should just FIX IT! On my computer, there is no listing for APSDaemon in msconfig, WinPatrol, in the services list, or anywhere else, so disabling the service is not an option. The process is using 50% of my CPU and iTunes is using the other 50%. Even starting the TaskManger is almost impossible, much less killing the process. I have to hit the power switch (thank goodness it's configured to turn the computer off!). This acts like an invasive malware program. Does it report back home? Probably. There's no way of knowing. It's certainly not letting anything else run on the computer and it MUST be doing something .....

I DO NOT have an iPod, iPad, or any other wireless device (Apple or otherwise) - so I should have the option of NOT installing the iPod Service, iPad Service, Bonjour Service, Apple Update, Apple Mobile Support, Apple Application Support, APSDaemon, and qttask.exe. WinPatrol repeatedly asks me if I want to allow qttask to autorun on bootup, and NO, I don't want it to run! Why is it so persistent? Why can't I stop it from trying to always run? What's the motive for that? Based on experience, I assume that the next update of iTunes and/or Quick Time will have another new program starting that I don't know about and will have to look for. That's why I don't want updates automatically - I don't want to spend all my time figuring out what slowed my computer down (well actually stopped it from working).

For all of you who are totally enamored and infatuated with Apple products and think I'm just bashing Apple - the same rant can be applied to Adobe Products (Acrobat and Flash Updaters, Adobe Air, Adobe Update, for example), Microsoft Products (Silver Light, Media Player, Internet Explorer, for example), Real Time, Rhapsody, Google, Yahoo, and a host of others. (Take a look at how many 'Updaters' and 'Update services' are running for Google and Yahoo, for example)

The point is that these programs act like viruses and worms - they use up the resources and slow the computers down to a crawl. These companies need to stop loading our computers up with unproven programs so they can track our habits and target ads to us. They need to provide reliable products that don't take over and aren't so invasive! And they need to give us the option of NOT loading these things instead of adding them on the sly (hmmmm, on the QT as in QTTASK for example?). In most cases, they don't even TELL you these things are being installed, so they certainly don't give you an option. That behavior is exactly the behavior of viruses, worms, and trojans - so do you think I should just allow that behavior because they are Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc.? No matter what 'service' a program does, if it takes over control of your computer or prevents anything else from being done, it is NOT a very useful service. It is poor programming!

I'm using Win XP.  In C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support I found 2 files: APSDaemon.exe and APSDaemon_main.dll.  I renamed them both, then restarted iTunes and it's running just fine.

This must have been the computer cleaner industry came about, just as the virus and trojan anto virus industry came about. One needs to buy another of this to keep off these invaders at bay. Instead of each of them having an application running in the system tray. Why don't Windows come about with an update that will hold all such applications that need to check for updates and is left to the user to manually check for updates or the least only when one of these programs is invoked by the user. It has to be asked only once and if the user responds in the negative, should never be asked for a year.

I will preface this with 'it is my opinion' and that I'm simply a high school teacher who works with the kids who are supposedly part of the computer age (emphasizing supposedly... since the vast majority don't know what a server is, what a cpu is, the difference between ram... but I won't go on a rant about that here...).

There are certain companies that are clearly leaders in the computer/internet/etc field.  Apple, mirosoft, IBM, CISCO...etc).  This is simply a case of one of the bigboys updating their software (on behalf of users everywhere) and the smallboys understanding what these updates entail as far as the workability of their programs. (I can give a long lecture here on the 'New' VS the 'Old' Imigrants in US history (or any country's history for that mater)).  A lot of times the smallboys are arrogant enough to ignore the warnings, the newspaper articles, the emails, the test versions... of these new updates.  (It may (however) been a lack of cooperation putting the blame on Apple (but I think if even amateur like myself paid attention to the updates before they came out officially).  But I really doubt that based on Apples history.)

There are very specific malware, anvirous, and computer basic protection companies that failed to look into Apple's update before the update what put out to the general public.  Apple advised us to, when the companies we use (and I use top of the line protection services (not the free crap)) worked their softwar to be compatible with the bigboys (Apple) update it was simply a matter of un-installing all our protection systems and re-installing them (granted... not an easy task... but ... the point is... if they had tested their software when apple offered test versions... (assuming from my amateur eyes they did) then they could have updated their software before Apple institued a software update to the general publik(with a russian communist version of the word for those that disagree with me))))))))).  (A few extra parenthesis since I over use them (sorry (very sorry)).

I have the same basic issue.  This BS has to end Apple!  I use Windows XP SP3 and I have iTunes 10.5.3.3.

When ASPDaemon.exe starts running it pegs my CPU at 99%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like Seitchike I've renamed the ASPDaemon files and that has stopped this severe error.

    I've also removed Bonjour.

I have a 5th Generation iPod Video - no iPad, no iPhone etc so why do I need 'wirerless' support? ****, half the time I don't have an internet connection any way. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Apple installer is one of the worst.  I don't get any options to *NOT* install any of this crappy Apple Software.

Apple take a note  - it's *MY* fricken' computer not yours so stop acting like you own it - you don't.

Try to close the automatic app download and stop the iphone/ipad/ipad mount automatically.

These two steps can help u fix this problem.

Have the same problem on Xp suddenly :

the problem resolved like this :

In general when the summer time clock arrive like yesterday, I uncheck the "

adjust the clock for auromatique of summer time" in Xp to prevent steinberg/s program to rescan vst plugin when the summer time change..So today when I open Itunes I got the"apsdaemon.exe" crash I found this forum and tried your solution but without success ..I found that with account logout is okwhen I start Itunes and don't want to do this everytime so I found the problem ( for me):

if the "adjust the clock for auromatique of summer time" in the tab /propriety time and date / time zone / is unchecked : allways crash!!

    with check: no crash!

So it can help some people

    Best regards

renaming APSDaemon.exe and APSDaemon_main.dll files in the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\  solved APSDaemon error.

    Hi Seitchik:

What did you rename the two files to? It is now Feb 2014 and problem just popped up on my XP SP3 system. You wrote two years ago that you renamed the files APSDaemon.exe and APSDaemon_main.dll, rebooted and the error message (MSVCR80.dll file is missing from APSDaemon.exe) went away after you rebooted.

    Thanks in advance.
