You can also change your SysPrefs so that the Mac doesn't go into Sleep when you don't want it to .... for example, when you want to charge the iPod. You won't lose much by doing this; it can still be set up to shut down the display and your hard drive.
My own preference these days is to disable automatic sleep completely. If I wind up leaving for a few hours or an afternoon, I don't mind leaving it in the 'near sleep' mode that it goes into and even that happens only when I overlook putting it to sleep manually. You can do that with the remote, with the power button, or of course via the Apple Menu.
