After ios 5 upgrade songs won't load into iphone4

It appears like iTunes is syncing all the songs onto my iPhone (i'm watching the individual songs go from grey to black under Devices > My iPhone > Music) from the iTunes side, but all the songs appear as greyed out on my iPhone. In other words, i can see them, but they won't play.

Any advice? I'm a music freak and this is killing me.

I'm having exactly the same problem. I received several error messges when updating to IOS5 but the phone loaded up nicely and I went through the options to setup icloud, etc.

In itunes, I setup to sync all my tracks, podcasts, etc. this all worked fine before and my mac and iphone were talking nicely to one another. Now I've got nothing on my phone. Its a total nightmare, the contacts have come across but no music, no video, etc. The itunes menu shows that they are in the phone but next to each track is the sync symbol to the left. I click sync repeatedly, I restart everything, I revert phone ot last backup again (three times now I've setup icloud).

My iphone has just turned into 'a phone'.

I've searched this problem and therea re loads of examples of similar issues. APPLE, please respond. This time it doesn't "just work" I'm afraid

I'm a fan of apple and have alawys reccommended them, this needs resolving.

Many thanks

I had a similar problem with songs greyed out and not syncing and apps not syncing either. I also tried multiple restarts and redownloading iOS5 etc. The one thing which seems to have sorted it out for me is buying a (free) app from the app store on my iphone and then syncing with itunes. Oddly enough this seems to have woken itunes up to the fact that stuff wasn't synced and started the process of a full sync.

A bit random and i read this on another thread, but it worked for me.

I have exactly the same problem with my Ipod touch after upgrading to IOS5. When I synch using a cable to connect to a Win 7 64bit OS, the synch takes forever t complete. When I open up my music in the ipod, some songs are greyed out and wont play. Come on Apple, this is a worse roll out of an upgrade than Microsoft. I am a recent Apple convert and am now starting to have my doubts. Fix this error, and do it soon please.

I've got the same issue on my iPhone 4. Some songs synced fine. The vast majority did not. They are greyed out and unplayable. They register has taking up memory/space but can't be played.

For an iOS5 that supposed to allows you to cut the cord to the computer, I shouldn't have to plug my phone in to "fix" an issue that should have never taken place!!

Isn't that what development cycles are for, get out the bugs before the "masses" have to deal with this BS. Isnt supposed to just work!?! Not too happy right now. Don't get me wrong, it's a great OS, huge improvements on the previous iteration, but this little hiccup put a huge black eye on it for me.

Help me out please, How can I fix this issue? I've synced 3 times over no change!

This is the problem that I had: After upgrading to IOS 5 selected songs in my library would not play. All songs that I had purchased on iTunes would play, but many of the songs that I had ripped from my cd's did not play.

This was my solution: First I transferred all purchases from my ipod to iTunes. Then I backed up my iTunes library.

I restarted the iPod in restore mode by holding down the power on key at the top and the home key. Release the power on key when you see the apple logo icon. The ipod should be connected to your computer. It will show up in iTunes in restore mode. Choose to restore the iPod to factory settings. This will reload IOS 5 and erase ALL YOUR DATA. After the iPod is restored, sync the music and apps back to the iPod. (I have 64gb iPod Touch and this process took all night). Use the iTunes screens for your iPod to reset your preferences. You will have to complete the move to iCloud again on the iPod.

Everything appears to work normally now and the songs that were not playing do play.

Thanks,

Tom

I tried all the things in the forums and I also did all the things the Apple techs told me to do... Uninstalled iTunes completely, and then reinstalled. I erased all the info on my iPhone 4S, set it up as a new phone and tried to sync again. All of it failed to work.

Here is what worked for me:

1) Start iTunes

2) Connect iPhone

3) Click on iPhone device in left hand column

4) On the Summary tab, in the Options section, I had nothing checked.

5) Check "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC"

6) Started sync

7) Waited until a track was syncing

8) Uncheck "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC"

9) Click on Apply and started the sync again

Most of the tracks made it over but not all of them.

I sent my computer and iTunes diagnostic information over to Apple and now I'm waiting on a response from them on how to get the remaining tracks over to my iPhone.
