Jan 6, 2012 5:03 PM in response to transmogrificationby AdnanB,Hijacking? Lol, you really are single-minded aren't ya?
I merely stated the obvious which is that it is pointless to speculate when we don't know anything for sure and we just have to wait until a jailbreak or update comes out, but apparently you took offense because you supposedly know more than us and don't want to be lumped in with we the clueless.
And if that is really the case, it would be of great help to anybody following this thread to share this info that you supposedly possess that no one else knows about. But the more probable scenario is that you know nothing more than we do, then technically the word "clueless" would be applicable to you as well and you shouldn't whine about it.
Now, back to the topic at hand. None of your questions were relevant. Yes it's a different chip, and yes it's a different baseband. So what? None of that tells us what we want to know. Whether the ability to turn off 3G exists but was left out intentionally (by the OS) or whether it is incapable of turning it off manually.

Jan 7, 2012 4:30 AM in response to parabiosisby Andie2110,I've given up trying to contact Apple about this. They have their heads in the sand. If we all returned our 4s phones they'd maybe get the message! My only regret is that I sold my 4 before checking the 4s out fully.
I've been into all the Apple stores in London and the staff (including the Genius bar staff) are clueless about this problem! COME ON APPLE - READ THESE THREADS AND POST A DEFINITIVE REPLY.

This is a user-to-user forum. Apple does not post here. No matter how much you shout.

Jan 7, 2012 7:40 AM in response to Andie2110by Allan Sampson,Yes you can, and bluetooth also.
Many airplanes now have wi-fi access during flight. You must have airplane mode enabled with cell phones during flight and with the iPhone you can turn on wi-fi access after enabling airplane mode for this reason.

Jan 7, 2012 11:11 AM in response to Trioxideby marshmeli,The issue is not about using wifi... it is about the ability to pick using Edge or 3G. The problem for many arises when the 3G signal is present but so low that data (and maybe calls) cannot be sent/made, but the phone will never switch to EDGE which has a stronger signal.

Jan 7, 2012 3:53 PM in response to kvn4000by romeo666,To Respective People in Apple, all the GENIUS & Pro's!! who working in Apple, kindly take note!!!im from malaysia and this is the 1st time for me to change from NOKIA & come to APPLE(because u guys so called best out of the best but please don't prove! it WRONG)..i too encounter the same issue..Our service provider only giving 3G coverage to certain areas. Most of the places, won't be getting the 3G coverage whereby we able to use edge speed. Unfortunately the is no option for us to switch from 3G to 2G or Edge, basically we find it difficult to use the phone at ALL!!Please come up with the solution AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!
Thanks & Regards,
Romeo

This is a user-to-user forum. You're not speaking to Apple here. Submit your feedback to Apple by using the appropriate link on the Feedback page:

You're telling me Tim Cook and Apple management dont read a 369 message thread on their own forums about their latest product?
I really doubt that. Corporations view this kind of discussion atleast on a par with 'submit your feedback' forms in terms of assessing customer satisfaction. And not just on their own forums either but community resources eg. MacRumors etc.
I am sure the message has gotten through already, it's just whether they choose to: -
- Re-implement the feature in a later firmware due to this kind of feedback
- Assume people will stop complaining when they resolve the underlying battery issue in 5.0.1 on 4s
- Decide it's a minor issue that affects too few people to bother about putting it back in.
I hope they go with the first option.

Jan 9, 2012 9:02 AM in response to Codeusby transmogrification,It's not an "option" to "re-implement" something that wasn't there in the first place. There has never been an option to manually toggle from 3G to 2G with the iPhone 4S.

Hey transmogrification,
Don't see your point in making such comment.....
Thought we all should be happy
Not sure if you'll follow my line of reasoning below.... but here it goes:
1) it is understandable that the older generation of a product line may not have all features of the current offering. This is very much always due to hardware limitation.
2) the latest iteration of any product "should" provide for backwards compatibility. This is a industry norm. Imagine buying the latest and greatest Microsoft office product and realise that the Pivot table function of Excel had been removed. In this scenario - it is justifiable for people to get vocal about the missing feature. Ditto for the 3g toggle function.
Another example - which may makes it even clearer for you is - imagine that Apple remove the playlist function for 4S - how do you think people will react? Are we going to pretend that the playlist (which we all grew accustomed with now) is not part and parcel of iPhone and now that its gone - we should just accept 4s for what it is?
-
Jan 9, 2012 7:25 PM in response to SG Guyby transmogrification,I understand and support your opinion, whole heartedly. Though, one error in your logic: if the latest itteration of any product should provide backwards compatiblity, then why don't shoes with Velcro closures have laces?

Jan 9, 2012 7:34 PM in response to waterblaze123by dani4576,According to an article I read, they just added a feature in iOS 5.1 beta 3 that allows you to turn of 3g and sqitch to EDGE on iPhone 4Ss. Also, Siri does not work on EDGE.

Jan 9, 2012 7:58 PM in response to transmogrificationby SG Guy,interesting comparison of artifacts here....
we are talking features - don't Velcro new closure perform the function of a shoelace?
In this sense - the feature of a shoelace in Velcro is still present - and further enhanced
