Q: iPhone 4S unable to turn off 3G?!

If you read just a few posts up you will see that Apple with be restoring the function in the next update!!!

It's General > Network > Enable 3G > OFF on my 3GS running version 5.0.1 and like you I do my data based activities over WiFi which saves me big $$.  I do periodically enable 3G when I need to access Cellular Data but this is very very rare as I dsilike giving the big telecos any more of my money than I have to.

Wonderful news!!! We have prevailed. Apple has announced the return of the toggle. Still in beta but we will get back and soon:

So, i've updated to 5.1 beta 3 on 4s.

3G switch is there now, and it  is working. Well done.

Is the 4S battery life getting better after turning off the 3G?

They are bringing it back with the next software update.

For me is better for the moment. I keep 3G off and only WIFI sometimes , the 4S has now 24 hours from the last full charge and still 71% battery.

L.E. Forgot to say that I have no more droped calls. I'm happy now with 3G Off/On back.

5.1b3 gives much improved battery life with 3G ON and even more with it OFF thanks to the 're-implemented' 3G toggle.

I am getting  70-80% remaining battery after 24 hours with it off and most other features like push and location Services etc on.

That's great news. What i'd really like to see, however, is some mechanism to set a toggle like "When connected to WIFI, disable Cellular Data & 3G"

Or at least a handy app to one-touch switch between the two.  I'm on Fido, and even when on WIFI, anything I download counts against my data plan unless i manually go in and disable CD&3G.

Nice to see Apple's heard our cries and put the seperate option to disable 3G back in tho.

Dude, you dont need a toggle for what you are talking about. iPhone intelligently switches to WiFi when in a location with a known WiFi network with previously entered credentials.

I'm happy to see the 3G toggle possibly being added to iPhone 4S but what you suggest would be good too from a battery saving standpoint - did you know though, you can put your phone in flight mode and still put Wi Fi on? No messing, give it a go!

When will us common folk (non-developers) have access to the update with the 3G toggle?  Will it be with the next software update?

Yes, in iOS 5.1, which is now at beta 3 as has been discussed (and a violation of their NDA if any are developers or beta testers) but no one can say when it will be released.

I see. Airplane Mode disables wifi too. Just turn wifi on next. Hmm.
