Jan 13, 2012 2:45 PM in response to MRYFLYGUYby paulcb,To clarify, Airplane Mode does turn off wifi but you can turn it back on.

Jan 13, 2012 2:53 PM in response to MRYFLYGUYby Matt NewBones,Naaa, not true. Airplane Mode disables wifi too. Just tried it.
didnt try it first hey?
I've changed my profile picture to demonstrate.
The only hinderance is you lose GSM netowrk functionality such as phone calls and SMS (excluding iMessage).
A button, as TheRob2010 suggests, that disables data and maintains GSM & Wi Fi would be useful.

Jan 13, 2012 2:54 PM in response to paulcbby Matt NewBones,Yes, as I stated "you can put your phone in flight mode and still put Wi Fi on".

Jan 13, 2012 3:21 PM in response to Matt NewBonesby AdnanB,There is such a switch, it's called "Cellular Data". That disables all data (whether it be Edge or 3G) but keeps calls (GSM or 3G) and wifi. What rob2010 was asking for was some automatic thing that turned off data when on wifi, when at the moment it's a two-step process.
But I don't see the necessity of that. When on Wifi, doesn't the iPhone stop using cellular data anyway?

Jan 13, 2012 3:25 PM in response to AdnanBby Dah•veed,They are not complaining about turning off cellular data, they are complaining about not being able to turn off 3G. They still want cellular data, they just want it to come over 2G or Edge.

No, not with AT&T because you can talk and surf at the same time, right? Can't do this with Verizon.

Yes, when the phone is on WiFi, it stops using cellular data, regardless of whether it's AT&T or Verizon.

Jan 13, 2012 4:04 PM in response to AdnanBby Allan Sampson,For internet access yes, but visual voicemail messages are downloaded to the iPhone via the carrier's cellular data or internet network only. If you miss a call or don't answer a call while your iPhone is connected to an available wi-fi network and the caller leaves a voicemail, it will be downloaded via the carrier's cellular data or internet network.
If you send or receive MMS while connected to an available wi-fi network, the MMS is exchanged via your carrier's cellular data or internet network. iMessages would be exchanged via the wi-fi you are connected to for internet access.

Right. Voice is still active on AT&T.

Jan 13, 2012 4:14 PM in response to MRYFLYGUYby IdrisSeabright,Huh? Voice is still active on either varitey of phone when it's on WiFi. Most data (see Allan's explaination) is going over WiFi, not cellular. That's the same whether the phone is AT&T or Verizon.

Jan 13, 2012 4:20 PM in response to IdrisSeabrightby MRYFLYGUY,Really? Back when Verizon iPhone service was announced, one of the arguments for AT&T service was that users can talk and access wifi at the same time, reportedly not available with Verizon. I think I read several tech reports saying this was the case. Not so any longer? I really HATE AT&T!
-
Jan 13, 2012 4:23 PM in response to MRYFLYGUYby Allan Sampson,You can talk and access AT&T's cellular network for internet access at the same time when connected to AT&T's 3G network. This is completely separate from accesing the internet via an available wi-fi network. You can talk and access the internet via an available wi-fi network at the same time with AT&T and Verizon.

What i'd really like to see, however, is some mechanism to set a toggle like "When connected to WIFI, disable Cellular Data & 3G"
Not to pick on Rob, but see what happens when you introduce a completely different issue to a thread? You introduce mass confusion in the posts that follow. I know it was an innocent deviation, done that myself a few times.
This thread has nothing to do with wi-fi, airplane mode, or the ability to surf the web while you talk (BTW, you still can't do that on Verizon due to CDMA technology). This thread is about the 4S' lack of a switch to manually disable 3G so that the user can use EDGE instead.

Jan 13, 2012 5:21 PM in response to Dah•veedby AdnanB,I realize this. I already know the diff between the 3G toggle and Cell data toggle. I was just responding to someone else who brought up the other issue.

Jan 13, 2012 5:24 PM in response to MRYFLYGUYby AdnanB,NO! Nothing to do with wifi. On UMTS (3G/GSM such as with AT&T), you can talk and use data using the carrier's data connection. On CDMA (such as with Verizon), if you're on a call, you lose said cell data connection till you hang up. Wifi is *always* connected, regardless of carrier.
