Outlook 2011 for mac iCloud issues

THis is crazy

I have been using entorage and outlook for years now that i upgraded to Icloud no email or configuration will work.

I dont care for the mail app i have all my mail in outlook. tried all posted settings still does not work.

I wish i could roll back to me.com anyone able to get settings to work in outlook 2011.

I kept getting authentication errors for my .mac iCloud account in Oulook 2011 on my iMac i7 for the past few weeks (since late November 2011). However, Outlook 2011 on my MacBook Air worked perfectly, even though all the Outlook settings were exactly the same on both computers.


I tried all the settings in this discussion group and many others, including Apple's official settings (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864). I even called Microsoft, and they said I had to call Apple, since they were the source of the problem.


What worked for me was simply changing my password for iCloud. My password was iCloud compliant to begin with, but changing it allowed Outlook 2011 to work on my iMac. I saw this suggestion from someone who said his iCloud password was not compliant with Apple's requirements. Hopefully this will help others still experiencing problems with their iCloud accounts and Outlook 2011.

Just to complete the heated discussion here: I've chosen to use Outlook (previously Entouragte) prior to the advent of Mail. My whole mail history is here and I find what I'm looking for. I think that Apple is going the Microsoft-route by NOT making sure that a major share of their users will not be left in the rain with their day to day software PRIOR to pushing out new services. By all means: Microsoft has an office in Cupertino! I'm using Macs since 1984 for their simplicity but now, it seems, Apple is fighting a political fight with MS on the backs of their loyal users.

Apple is not responsible for Microsoft's lack of support for established, industry-standard, cross-platform sync protocols such as CardDAV and CalDAV that iCloud uses. They are not new protocols or anything proprietary that Apple has dreamt up.


Why should Apple delay the rollout of new services/features for everyone just because Microsoft are dragging their feet not supporting industry standards?


It was your choice to use Microsoft products which were never supported directly by Apple in MobileMe or iCloud, instead of the products MobileMe and iCloud have been advertised as working with.

Sorry, Julian. This is a game that nobody can win. Fingerpointing back and forth, argueing over what is standard, always blaming the other "side". This is geeky talk. I'm a user and I used to prefer Mac over WIN because it was usable... Why not simply think "client" rather than "I'm right"? How much could Apple win if they were including those who dare to make a decision using a software that is actually SOLD in the Apple store? (http://store.apple.com/us/search?find=microsoft+office+2011) rather than telling them "I'm right and you are wrong. Call Microsoft!"


I've seen Apple almost going down the drain because they did not bother adhering to any standards but were arrogant enough to believe that they would set new standards. Which they did. At the end. I admit. But now they are playing games with me.


I can highly recommend the book "How to drive your competition crazy" from Guy Kawasaki. Here, all is about client centric strategies.


Bottom line: Use the Microsoft support article (Thanks, Julian, the English version: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2648915/en) and set up a new account. It works.

As I mentioned, the protocols iCloud uses are not 'Apple standards' - they are industry wide, open standards not 'owned' by anyone. In iCloud's case it is Apple who IS adhering to standards now (unlike before with MobileMe), and it is Microsoft who isn't. Look up CardDAV and CalDAV if you don't believe me.


It is Microsoft who makes Microsoft Office - not Apple. Apple cannot make Microsoft's products compatible with industry standards - only Microsoft can do that.


The Microsoft Support article only tells you how to setup email (using another industry wide, open protocol that Apple adhere's to called IMAP). It does not let you sync contacts and calendars and Microsoft even admits in that very support article that THEIR product is not compatible with CardDAV and CalDAV.

I agree 100%. I have used both extensively, and honestly, if you are looking for business productivity - Microsoft offers more. It seems as though Apple has fallen into an arrogant space. I own iphones, ipods, ipad, mac, etc. etc. I no longer buy any music from Apple, and I don't use Mail.


It is astonishing to me how people blindly follow Apple (anything)!!!!

Do you not understand? Can't you read Microsoft's own support article, or are you just blind to Microsoft's faults?


Apple does not make Microsoft Office. Apple did not make MobileMe compatible with Office - Microsoft did by adding support for Apple's proprietary SyncServices protocol. If Microsoft wants Office to be iCloud compatible, then it is Microsoft who has to add CardDAV and CalDAV support. No-one else can do it.


Apple have finally done away with their own proprietary sync protocols used in MobileMe and have started using established, cross-platform, industry-standard, and open sync protocols. Doing so means iCloud customers can potentially use any CardDAV and CalDAV compatible sync client on any platform.


Microsoft Office is also not compatible with any other online calendar system which uses CalDAV, such as Google or Yahoo calendars.


Microsoft have chosen only to support their own, proprietary Exchange sync system in Office. However, Apple has added Exchange support to Apple's Mail and iCal applications. So, in fact, Apple's applications support more sync protocols than Microsoft's. Why aren't you complaining to Microsoft?


Only supporting your own proprietary sync protocol is what's arrogant. Supporting both industry standard, cross-platform protocols plus competitors proprietary sync protocols is the exact opposite.
