Does iCloud even work on Macs?

I've set up the iCloud pref pane to include all but Mail & Notes and Photostream. The Address Book is checked enabled for iCloud. And absolutely nothing happens. Apple's iCloud instructions for Mac seem almost non-existent. Where is the magic backup button?

ICloud is a model of what Macintouch calls "Mac marginalization." In the past it has referred to web sites and manufacturers that have given the Mac short shrift compared to Windows. Now Apple is marginalizing OS X in favor of its iOS products. In the same vein: all of the iOS products can stream video to Apple TV, but the Mac cannot.

I agree. You can use iCloud to backup your iOS devices, but not your Mac. They just want to lock you in to using their products, and since the Mac gives you the freedom to do what you want, they are marginalizing it.
