I think you misunderstood the responses. First of all Apple does not fix iPods with broken screens. They replace them with refurbished ones. Since cracked screens are considered abuse, you have to pay for an out-of-warranty repair which is $99 (for 8gb), $149 (for 32GB) or 199 (for 64GB). That should have been what the Apple store offered. Perhaps you misunderstood, or perhaps they gave you wrong information. This should answer all your questions: http://www.apple.com/hk/en/support/ipod/service/faq/ In some cases, the apple store has replaced the iPod for no charge, but this is rare at the discretion of the store staff. Also note that you can get the screen replaced by a 3rd party repairer (or you can do it yourself if you are very handy). Use google to find repairers and parts suppliers.

I've been reading posts about cracked iPod Touch screens. 80% say Apple store will replace - more than half of those say Apple Store replaced at no charge, the rest say charged $90-$100. my son went to our Apple Store at Willowbrook Mall Houston Texas - the Apple rep told him trhere was NO way to replace the screen - and that he would have to replace the entire iPod with a new one. The iPod still works great - just cracked screen (from pulling it out of his pocket - not dropped - and only 3 months old). I'm disappointed because I've purchased about 4 iPod's (each one larger) in the last 2-3 years. ALL of them from Target with their warranty (and purchased Apple care on top). This last one I wanted personalized after my son's father passed away - as a momento. The staff at APPLE store Willowbrook Mall Houston were very rude. I regret not buying this at Target where warranty covers damages, and they are easier to deal with. I haven't seen any posts where the Apple Stores customer service was so ... lacking. I would like to know if there are any stores in Houston area that offer better customer service. Or should I just go to Target and buy a new Apple 32g. It's a shame since I wanted to go to Apple store and upgrade 2 cells to iPhones.. but not any more. I don't want to give any business to the Willowbrook store. I think it depends on where you go... don't go there.

The manager that replaced it for free pretty much flouted Apple's official policy, which says broken screens are accidental damage and not eligible for exchange. It's at the manger's discretion to do so. Getting one is lucky, getting two???? Don't know until you try. but if you happen to get a second one I'd be considering altering my behavior to better protect the device, because I'd imagine a 'habitual breaker' will soon find themselves with no option but having to purchase replacements.

Skydiver - any idea where to go in Houston - which store. We didn't talk to a manager - but as I said for my son - hes had his iPod for less than 4 months - didn't drop it - slid out of his pocket cracked So he's not a habitial breaker- in fact the only reason we've traded iPod's was to trade up - and 2 stolen (one at school - one from a car break in). So basically I've been a faithful iPod purchaser for 10+ years... and the first time I ask for support - -Willowbrook mall customer support basically says "go away - buy a new one". If my son hadn't already spent $1,000++++ in iTunes over the years... I'ld be looking for an alternate player based on "Apple Customer Service" - - the "buying" experience has always been top notch. The "customer support" experience ... not so much.

I don't mean to seem harsh, but expecting Apple to replace the iPod due to user damage and getting mad when they won't is like getting mad when your car dealer won't replace or repair your car for free after you drove it into a tree.

Damage is not covered by warranty, so any free replacement you have seen reported here or elsewhere was done without official Apple policy, and reportedly Apple has been cracking down on stores doing that. So if the Apple Store has turned you down, there's nothing further you can do other than to pay the replacement charge.

Regards.
