Q: Outlook error

So I downloaded the iCloud control panel and set out to migrate from Mobile Me to iCloud, but the process hangs and then errors out at a point when iCloud status appears to be doing something with the contacts.   I get this error that I sent along to the Apple folks:

Error: 0x80040604: No reason set

I'm running Windows 7 professional, Outlook 2007 and the Mobile Me control panel was unistalled prior to installation of iCloud control panel.

What to try?

iCloud, Windows 7

    Hey PFox:

Actually, this solution works for all of us.  pcJohnD's checklist was the magic bullet.  I just have too many computers and had forgotten to REMOVE MOBILEME on this one.  (Which just so happens to be the one running all x64.)  LOL!  "All of a sudden - as if by magic - Outlook Contacts / iCloud sync worked just fine." - pcJohnD

That was it.  No problems, no issues, no nothing.  It works perfectly from what I can tell, and even though all my contacts are in "Contacts in iCloud", it's fine as I can change where Oulook looks for contacts by default, leaving functionality identical.

Thanx everyone. I feel much better now.

Didn't need to go to extremes in the end.

When I was getting this error I couldn't log out of iCloud either until finally I agreed to delete all contacts from Outlook. As soon as I did this and signed back in I was able to sync with Outlook during the set up process, whew, now time to back up my pst file before all is lost again!

I have the contacts sync problem but am not sure I understand the fix posted here.  In my case, the Outlook default contacts folder is the one containing the lionshare of contact information and the one that I want to sync with icloud which will then update my IPAD.

In the various scenarios listed here, it sounds like I need to delete my main outlook contacts and re sync, but that would of course be defeating the purpose.  Any suggestions on getting icloud to sync my existing contacts in my default outlook contacts folder?  It looks like its working, but nothing actually syncs.  I am left with the icloud contacts folder (with the one entry I entered into it) and the default (which by the way is my hotmail account) contacts folder complete with all past entries.

    Hi,

Worked great for me.  Thank you.  Thank you.  This was driving me crazy.  And I did backup everything, so I lost nothing.

For PFox, I remember the apple care people doing this for me about 8 months ago and just the other day when I went to send and email and doubleclicked to get my address book open I got the same **** error message I got before and all my contacts are gone.  So I guess I am back to apple care again.

I have spent over 5 HOURS on trying to find a solution for this!!!

I reinstalled iCloud, deleted all Microsoft updates, changed 'add-in' settings and more

I visited the iStore technicians for 45mins, my IT expert for over an hour, driven around like a wally for hours!!!

Your solution took 2 mins (including backing up) and BINGO!!!!

    Thank you sooooooo much.

I have Windows 8 and office 365. Everything was working fine until I disabled icloud and renabled it to try and get photostream working again and then I couldnt get Outlook setup correctly again even after reinstalling. With the information Pfox78 provided I just went into Outlook and deleted all my contacts and reminders (contacts ect. were already in icloud) and then the setup made it through just fine. Now it all works. thanks for the info.

This solution is still the best.  Don't waste your time with Apple support on the phone.  Just back up your contacts and calendars to a *.pst file.  Delete all of them on your outlook and on iCloud calendar and contacts online.  Re-install icloud for Windows and the sync will work.  Once it is complete.  Download all of your calendar and contact items and they will flow seemlessly to iCloud.

Yes it should be easier but thanks to PFox78 for saving us 3 hours on the phone with Apple with this solution!
