I solved the problem!  Hopefully this will work for you guys too.

First, on my iPad, I did a reboot by holding down the home button and the power button at the same time for 6 seconds.  (hold down the home button first, and then hold down the power button)  The screen will go black, and the Apple logo will appear.

Then I unplugged my Apple TV and plugged it back in.

Finally I unplugged my wirelesss router and plugged it back in.

Then I tried the mirroring, and this time it worked flawlessly.  I'm not sure if it was only one of those steps or all three that fixed the problem, but I suggest trying it.

    So Again:

    1.  Reboot iPad

    2. Restart the apple TV

    3. Restart your router

Thanks - for this... I'll give it a try.  I also got mirroring to work if I unplugged the hdmi cable from the back of the atv, started mirroring, and then plugged the hdmi cable back into the atv.

Strange, but this works for me almost everytime.  If I don't follow this process mirroring doesn't work.

I've been having a similar problem. I just got the iPhone 4s and one of the main features I was looking forward to was mirroring. I updated my apple tv 2 to 4.4(3038.2) and then attempted mirroring. After I double click the home button, swipe to the side, and select airplay, I then turn on the little mirroring switch and almost immediately the swith turns its self back off. I've restored my phone to see if that would fix it and it hasn't. I attempted to restore my apple tv but immediately after selecting restore on my apple tv I'm presented with the message "apple tv can't download the latest update right now. Try again later". I have been trying over and over for the past couple of days. Also I noted two other strange, possibly unrelated things, while I've been trying to solve this problem. First: on my apple tv when I go to Settings>General>About, at the very bottom of the screen, it's says "Activation Refused". The second thing, even less likely to be related to my problem, is that I am unable to purchase additional storage on iCloud from my iPhone 4s (likely due to the sudden and probably overwhelming demand). I keep getting an error message when ever I try. Lastly: now that my apple tv is up to date, should I not have a way to view photo stream? There's nothing about it anywhere in my apple tvs menu which I thought would be there, part of what's tipping me off that my mirroring problem is the apple tv and not my iPhone itself. To help back that theory up I have restored my iPhone twice- once from my previous backup, and the second time I started it as a new iPhone- and still the same problem, where my mirroring switch on my iPhone turns its self back off within seconds of me turning it on,  still continues. Hopefully SOMEBODY can shed light on this. I tried calling apple support but was on hold for 40 minutes before I ran out of time and gave up, and when I tried to schedule a phone call my only two options of date were set for the better part of a week from now. That's to be expected following the release of the new iPhone, but still I'd love to find a way to solve this problem without waiting quite that long.

    Hey andrewfrombrampton,

The one thing I can help out with is the photo streaming feature.  You don't need to do anything on your Apple TV menu to do photo or video streaming.  All you need to do is open up your Photo app on your phone, and when you are viewing a photo, there should be a small airPlay button that you can tap (I think at the top right corner of the screen).  Then select your Apple TV from the list, and your photo should appear on the TV.  The same thing goes for viewing videos or playing music.

Hopefully if that works for you, you know that AirPlay is working for you, and that it is just the mirroring issue that you need to solve.

As for the Apple TV updating problem, I don't have any suggestions.  All I can say is to try and do the software update again to make sure you have the latest version.  Make sure you have signed in with your apple ID, and make sure AirPlay is turned on in the settings.

THIS IS IT:  I had all of these problems with my iPad 2 and my Apple TV 2.  If the above response did not work for you (which it didn't for me), give this a shot.  I just got off the phone with Apple.  You need to:

    unplug your Apple TV 2

Use a micro USB chord (most phones/cameras use them as chargers) and plug the apple tv directly into a computer that is running iTunes.

Once the Apple TV is recognized it will ask to restore.

Click Restore and follow the prompts.

This will reset your Apple TV but install the latest firmware 4.4 on it.

If you're like me, my Apple TV 2 came with 4.1 and 4.4 will not update over the internet.  It MUST be plugged into iTunes through a computer and updated manually.

After this was done, I was able to mirror flawlessly.

Hope this helps anyone in my situation.

I figured it out.. You need software 4.4 for the Apple TV, but it won't update to that on the Apple TV itself. Apple appearently took back the updates to fix some problems. What you do is plug the Apple TV into your computer with a micro USB cord, MAKE SURE NO POWER SUPPLY OR HDMI IS PLUGGED IN. Restore the devise and it will boot up with 4.4 automatically. I had this same problem, and I called Apple directly. This worked for me. Expect a bug or two, but they are fixing it.

Oops, didn't realize it was already solved.

Nothing above worked for me but I found a solution!

It was a problem with my router (cisco) configuration, the WMM support in the QOS settings.

    To fix it :

    1. Login to your router

    2. Click on Application and Gaming

    3. Click on QOS

    4. Disable WMM Support

    5. Done

    It now all work flawlessly

  • JimLosAltos Level 1 Level 1

I was able to mirror with the OS as upgraded wirelessly (without plugging into a computer).

So, that problem might be fixed by now.

Now, I can't find music from iCloud, but that's another issue.

    Apple TV

You won't see music from the Cloud on ATV, if that's what you meant. It's in the purchased section within itunes (Computer or IOS)

  • JimLosAltos Level 1 Level 1

Just FYI -- there is another thread about 4.4 being out, then pulled, and some people needing to "downgrade' back to 4.3 because things like Optical out were disabled.

Just so you know that upgraded right away might not work or be viable for some people.

  • JimLosAltos Level 1 Level 1

Vazandrew: Thanks for responding. But the iTunes page says "iTunes Match stores your music library in iCloud and allows you to enjoy your colleciotn from anywhere, any time, on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, computer or Apple TV.

Might well be a misstatement, but the words are pretty clear.

    Apple TV

iTunes match is not released yet

The Apple TV portion of iCloud is for TV show purchases, currently US only, and photo stream

I was able to download 4.4 wirelessly and directly to my ATV without attaching ATV to my computer and without messing with my router. What I did find out is that mirroring will not work with the iPhone 4 or older, just the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. After turning on your ATV, merely enable your WLAN, then tap the home button twice. Then, swipe at the bottom of your device, left to right..look for the carrot, then finally enable mirroring for ATV!

Confusing. I have iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. Both on same wireless network as the new Apple TV. I cannot get mirroring to work. I can get iPad 2 music to play on Apple TV. But I cannot get "mirroring" of any other screen. I can get to the double=home, swipe twice and then see the Airplay option to change from iPad to Apple TV. BUT...there is no mirroring box to check below the Apple TV option.  What can I do? I wish to mirror iPad and iPhone, at least one or the other, to the Apple TV wirelessly.  F
