On my iPod 3rd Gen. it will crash when using cover flow. I have tried

going slow and sometimes I am able to get just about halfway through

the albums before it fails. For me 4.3.5 never would crash the iPod app

    like ver 5 does.

major disappointment Apple. Really how did you guys miss this in testing. Please readdress this as coverflow was cool before - nows its plain embaressing

i'm also having the same issue here. Simply can't use cover flow anymore, otherwise, the phone will just crash. This is very embarassing for Apple. They should fix this asap. I'm getting quite upset with all the end user experience issues using my iphone4 after upgrading to IOS5...

iOS 5.0.1 is not a fix!!!  It was cool to download and install via wifi though.  APPLE PLEASE bring back the OLD music app that had NO problems at all!!!

  • arcticguy16 Level 1 Level 1

Ohh cmon! iOS 5.0.1 is ****. Doesn't do anything.... Whats wrong with this people?

Are they so close that they test all their devices with music bought from iTunes? Maybe thats the reason why they don't see the problem.. But lets be honest, who of us has all the music legally bought from iTunes with 150x150 covers?

God **** it.. Now, we have to wait for 2 months for another release and.. maybe, they don't even fix this.. Bummer.

    I find this very disappointing.

  • tuliomarchetto Level 1 Level 1

It is a bug and, very much anoying! Apple must fix this quick, all of my cover are high resolution...

Our patience is wearing thin. You remember that iPod is primarily about music???  Would you rather use "was?" Fix this coverflow issue. Announce that you've resolved it. Then, make available the update for download. Pretty please.

I have the same problem. I don't know IF they're gonna fix this. this has happened since the iCloud came in. It's like iTunes doesn't take care of caching all the covers inside ipod anymore. I'm not sure IF they fix this; they don't respond very well. in OS X lion, many people told them about the WiFi bug. It still exists in 10.7.2, after 2 updates.

I really don't know why you guys are saying the cover flow is messed up. Mine works flawlessly on iPhone 4 iOS 5.0.1.

The only lag I see in the music app is switching songs in portrait orientation and on the lock screen. The lag is horrible. Very annoying. And on the lock screen the wallpaper will flash when changing songs.

But that is the only lag I have in music app. When switching songs in portrait mode and on the lock screen.

The cover flow in landscape works fine.

You realize that cover flow is only in the music app when in landscape orientation right?  There is no cover flow on the lock screen or portrait mode in the music app. Cover flow is only on landscape mode.

It is not a bug in cover flow. Cover flow works fine for me.

The lag only happens when songs are switched along with the album art in portrait unlock mode and on the lock screen.

On my iPod I had just over 300 Albums and with 4.3.5 I had no problems

with the cover flow. When Ver. 5 was installed I could not make it halfway

through and it would crash the music app. Another user posted about the

size of the cover art. I went through my 300+ albums and found about 40

that were much larger than 600 X 600. The 600 X 600 seems to be the

size that you get through iTunes / Gracenote.

I resized the larger files down to appox. 600 X 600 and it seems to have

cleared the coverflow problem with my iPod.

I seem to recall I had to update iTunes before I could update to ver. 5.

I could be wrong but could it be that iTunes was resizeing the artwork

before to be used in the iPod and now it doesn't. Just a thought.

How did you change the size to 600x600?

Would you be so kindly to email me how to do this?(I am very very familiar with the iphone file system, just have never had to do this)

It would be so much appreciated.

I had a similar issue recently with iOS 5.0.1 slowing down my iPhone 4 CoverFlow. Like all others here I too found the Music App in iOS 4.3 almost faultless before this upgrade. However, in my case I found that CoverFlow seemed to be "lumpy" due to large embedded album art. i.e. Pictures tagged in the music MP3s that were larger than the recommended 300x300 pixels. In one case the picture was 2000x2000 pixels before I re-sized it! I suspect that the new CoverFlow is resizing the actual Artwork "on the fly".

After proving my assumption with a few "manual" resizing of selected Artwork. I did a little searching and I came accross this free little tool. Thanks Hot Coffee Software!

It allows embedded art work in MP3s to be resized. The best bit being that it allows "batch" resizing of MP3 art by file or folder. I used the default 250x250 pixels @ 80% and resized some 1500 songs in about 3 minutes by setting the "Add Folder" in Sanse's tool to the root music folder that was being accessed by iTunes. I shut down iTunes before starting the re-size run.

I set iTunes to not sync my music (one check box in iTunes 10) so that all music was cleared from the iPhone before re-syncing. If you don't do this, you may get errors as iTunes tries to "merge" new data to your music files. It's only a small issue here, because I then re-synced after resizing the MP3 art.

Although not a perfect solution, it made my CoverFlow in iOS 5.0.1 on my iPhone 4 considerably faster and smoother.

I hope this helps until the Apple techies solve this issue.

know theres a better manual way to resize them...............But If i don't find it soon enough I guess I'll give this tool a try.......... It's actually made "specifically"  for Sansa MP3 Players that have missing album art when it is known the album art is in the MP3 files. But if you can resize the songs to whatever size you want (as oppose to just letting the tool automatically resize them), I can see how it could work for iTunes music..................................Thanks for letting us know.
