Hey!

I just upgraded my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5. All went well, then at the end, it asks me a few set ups (like language, Location, and WiFi settings).

After that, it attempts to activate, and fails, giving me the following error in iTunes: "There is no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate."

Problem is, there IS a SIM card in the phone, I tried taking it out, and putting it back in, tried with another SIM, tried the SIM in another phone, worked fine, just not the iPhone!

I would appreciate any help!

Also, the phone was Jailbroken before, and the SIM worked fine. Just not now, when it tries to activate.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO GO BACK TO THE BEST PREVIOUS UPDATE OF IOS4. THAT"S ALL I EXPECT NOW!

    Hello vinod1986,

Exactly the same problem with my iPhone 3GS 16GB on Canada's Telus network. I followed all the prompts properly and at the end of the long process of upgrading, my 3GS is now basically a piece of paperweight. Even Emergency calls are not going through. The SIM card just is not being detected. I also tried doing a RESET by pressing the Sleep/Power button and the Main button for 10 seconds, and that did not do anything. Basically, the phone is asking me for language and country of residence, etc. like it just came off a factory assembly line!

Are you listening Apple Tech Support? It is a business phone and I am losing business because of this stupid glitch that Apple should have known about.

    Very disappointed.

If you have a jailbroken phone the update will probably brick your iPhone as it seems to have done. No help here on these forums for jailbroken phones. Sorry.

    Hi, vinod 1986

    try,

disconect your phone from computer. press home and power button together for about 10 sec. then press only home button and conect to your computer. do not release the home button until the computer recognize the iphone.

mine was recovered by this solution. but, it is only from no-sim porblem. still it is dead.

    Hi,

I tried updating my iphone 3Gs to IOS 5.

After reformatting the whole phone, I am now stuck at the welcome page.

Whenever I pluck my phone to laptop, iTunes shows " There is no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate"

    What can I do?

I have no phone to use for 3 weeks =(

    @wendy191,

Have you jailbroken your phone before?
If you have, I don't see any way you could go back to IOS4 (4.3.3 or 4.3.5) (However, experts might be able to help you)

When you jailbreak you iPhone you update your baseband to iPad's Baseband i.e. 6.50 (something like that) & once that happens there's no going back (at least a legitimate way) unless you do what this guy says.

Watch this video on youtube. Listen to what he says & you can surely get through the activation.

I did all that but still nothing

Vinod, me too. I followed all the steps and end up with -- please insert the right sim card or get a replacement. in fact I bought the unlocked phone from ebay and the user did not send me the phone sim card. It was locked to AT&T and i'm using T mobile now.

anything else I can do to save the phone ?

That happens when you try to update a jailbroken phone. There is no solution here or from Apple. Buy an authorized unlocked phone or live with a subsidezed phone from a carrier. Cutting corners will not solve the problem. Sorry.
