What is "Documents and Data" for in iCloud preferences?

As far as I understand, iWork documents are automatically pushed between iOS devices and can be downloaded manually to a Mac or PC on icloud.com/iwork.

So what is the "Documents & Data" option in iCloud system preferences for? It doesn't seem to have any purpose since the only way to exchange iWork documents using a Mac is manually using a web browser?
