Nov 11, 2011 7:13 AM in response to reds15by Lawrence Finch,Shutting down functions will NOT fix the problem. The only way to fix it is to find the ONE app that is causing the problem. Alternatively, restore the phone as new, do not reload the backup, do not add any email accounts or apps, and check the battery life. If it is still bad you have a hardware problem. If it is OK add apps back a few at a time.

Still waiting for an official comment from Apple what in their eyes the problem really is (and how it can be fixed).

Nov 11, 2011 8:15 AM in response to RakeshPDXby KannaPrasad,Well, Today I installed IOS 5.0.1 on IPhone 3GS and tested for 1 hour. I didn't see any Battery drain, otherwise it used to drain 4% in 1 hour. Thanks Apple

Nov 11, 2011 8:16 AM in response to RakeshPDXby reds15,What do u mean don't add email accounts or apps? What the heck is the sense of having this type of phone if you can't use it the way it was meant to be used....what a pain

Nov 11, 2011 8:24 AM in response to reds15by Lawrence Finch,What I mean is do nt add apps or email accounts to diagnose the problem and determine if it is a hardware problem. Note that I ALSO said that after this test add them back a few at a time to identify the one causing the problem. I think you didn't read my whole message.

Nov 11, 2011 8:31 AM in response to RakeshPDXby reds15,well i know what the problem is ...it's the lOS-5 update. Had the phone for a year with not problems until then. So mabye if I restore the phone back to new I wont have to test the apps because I haven't put anything on this phone since the update. Only there might have been updates in security in that udate that I would need.....I don't know.... all too complicated for me. I have a life and I can't spend it fighting with my cell phone...It's supposed to make my life easier, not more difficult..As I said when I can I will dump it.

Nov 11, 2011 8:41 AM in response to reds15by Lawrence Finch,Well, you are wrong, it is not the iOS 5 update. If it were, everyone would have the problem. If you search the forum you will find that EVERY RELEASE over the past 4 years has been associated with battery problems for some users, and also between releases (see below). The problem is that something was corrupted during the update. Your choices are to dump the phone or figure out what was corrupted and fix it. There's nothing that Apple or anyone else can do to help you, because the problem is with your phone specifically, not the release, not the model, not with all (or even a large number) iPhones.
Battery problems are not new:

Nov 11, 2011 10:02 AM in response to RakeshPDXby jfborg,I have an iPhone 4. Upgraded software to iOS 5 and experienced the famous battery problems. As soon as I switched off mobile data, battery drain was reduced considerably. Same with iPad 2. I have to rely on WiFi until Apple finds a reliable fix, I guess.

Nov 11, 2011 10:08 AM in response to jfborgby Lawrence Finch,You could start by installing the fix that Apple release yesterday. And you could read the thread you posted to for information on how others fixed the problem themselves.

Nov 11, 2011 10:39 AM in response to RakeshPDXby Sarge01,Like I said in another post:
It's like apple says; " you want to experience a battery problem?? We will give you a battery problem. Update to 5.0.1. and you will get what you wish for! Now stop nagging! "
Battery problem is still there. I know it is the first day and all, but experience till now is battery dropping even faster.
Just right after unplugging after overnight charge it went down within seconds!
Everything except " find my iphone " is turned off.
I regret that I wanted the newest gadget and needed to have the 4S right away. I also regret updating the firmware. I will give it another few days to test and report back here.

Nov 11, 2011 10:49 AM in response to MarkAtlantaby MarkAtlanta,Now I am no longer sure - I charged 3GS to the max, disconnected it ant left turned on. 2 hours later it is still at 100%! Hmm, Maybe Apple actually fixed the battery issue?

Nov 11, 2011 11:20 AM in response to MarkAtlantaby Lawrence Finch,There isn't, and never has been, a "battery issue". There have been some phones that experience battery drain higher than the user expected. Some of this is expectations that were not met but are within published specs, Some of it is due to application problems, and a couple of reasons appear to be higher than required data usage from built in functions. 5.0.1 fixes ONLY the last of these. There isn't one single cause of heavy battery drain. It's a symptom, not the problem. It has many possible causes. Most of these causes have been around as long as there have been iPhones around. And there are published solutions in these forums for most of the causes. iOS 5 introduced a couple of new causes, which 5.0.1 claims to fix. But it doesn't fix all of the other causes that have been around for 4 years.
If you call a doctor and tell her you have a fever she cannot diagnose what your illness is from that information alone. And if you have unusually heavy battery drain no one can diagnose what is causing it from that information alone.

Nov 11, 2011 12:45 PM in response to RakeshPDXby eharrell,Hello all, I updated to iOS 5 a week and a half ago. I was losing battery by lunch from a full charge through 6AM. I have followed several suggestions this week to no avail. This morning I did the following: 1- Reset Network Settings through General / Reset and I changed my email account from Push to Fetch every 15 minutes. My battery life is much better. Since 11:43 AM, I have gone from 80% battery to 72% battery. Not that this is a permanent fix, but maybe it helps find the root of the problem?
