Q: IOS-5 battery power drain issue

OMG.. I have a 3g and since the upgrade my battery drains completely in 7 hours with no use at all!!

I did all that was suggested...nothing running in the background, push is turned off...I even shut down cloud.  My old samsung worked much better.

It's always something with this phone. Oh, not to mention I have NEVER seen "3g" on my phone. When not at home with my wi-fi the phone uses Edge which is absolutly useless. So I cannot get internet outside of my home unless there is wi-fi in the area. I pay for data and really never use it. ..it buffers for 30 minutes to an hour...

Was thinking of an iphone 4S as a Christmas gift for my son..no way. Going to look for something that is a little more reliable

Apple will issue the ios 5.0.1 soon that will resolve this issue but untill then this is the fix:

Developers have localized the issue which is linked to the gps staying active when the toggles "compass calibration" and "setting time zone" is on.

Simply go to >> Settings >> Location Services >> System Services >> Toggle "compass calibration" and "setting time zone" to OFF

You can turn these back on after ios 5.0.1 is on your phone. (public release soon).

Another possible fix for iOS5 4s battery issue....

I had not been experiencing any issues with the battery life on my 4s for the first week or so. Then 2 days ago the battery started to drain within just a couple hours of standby and less with use. I also noticed that my daylight savings time did not update correctly this morning. I had tried deleting contacts, turing off the likely battery hogs (GPS, bluetooth, push, etc), rebooting, turning off time zone, etc but nothing fixes the issue.

I remembered that I had recently paired it with the bluetooth in my car. By unpairing it and rebooting, both the time and battery issues appear to be resolved. The car had been paired previously with my old iPhone and I am guessing that there may have been some issue reconciling the contacts and information perviously synced to the car and the same type of info on my new phone.

Here's what worked for me. Turn off photostream. If you have photostream enabled on your mac or PC turn it off. On my phones it was constantly updating the iphone with over 1000 pictures. I turned off photosteam on both of my iphones and my ipad. I turned off photostream on my mac, and I went to icloud.com in my account info and reset the photostream erasing all my pictures from photostream. Since then my battery life has gone from about 7 hours to over 30.

After experimentation, my lasting "fix" was to disable all notifications in the Notification Center on the iphone4. Yesterday, I disabled my calendar and messages notifications. Settings>Notifications>Calendar/Messages> click off for each. While only 24 hours later, my battery is functioning again at the same level. After 2 hours of phone use this am, my battery was only minimally consumed.

If that is the problem then why do I NOT have a battery problem when I did NOT turn off "compass calibration" and "setting time zone", and why have so may others in this and other threads fixed the problem by other means not related to these two settings?

I use Find Friends once or twice per day, and unless I power down after using the application -my battery drains fully in 12 hours with no additional use.

You may consider that different people use different applications and settings. Different solutions may work.

I was specifically answering the post that said that turning off compass calibration and setting time zone was THE fix for battery drain. It is not. And your response certainly agrees with my observation. battery drain is a symptom that can have many possible causes. And different users will identify different causes. I do not use Find my Friends. I use Exchange email; do you use Exchange email? When I get a lot of mail and I make several calls my battery drains in 12 hours also. But it has with 3 different iPhones for the past 4 years. The more features of the phone you use the faster the battery will drain; you don't get something for nothing.

That's why I charge my phone overnight, every night. I start every day with a full charge, and I make it to bed time about 99% of the time without charging during the day. If I spend an hour or two on the phone I may not make it. But I carry a backup battery for those rare occasions. And have for 4 years.

The cause of IOS5 battery power draining issue for me was the Exchange Mail Accounts.

My iPhone 3GS was heating a lot and draining really fast the battery.

So, to solve the issue, delete your EXCHANGE MAIL ACCOUNT.

Re-add the account as IMAP (Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Other).

You can keep all others features on.

You can ususally even add it back as Exchange, because it is a transient condition. And, BTW, this has been a primary cause of battery drain for every model and every version for the past 4 years.

Hi, I'm using IPhone 4 and since I updated To IOS 5 my battery is draining in 6 hours, I have tried everything you can imagine and I found the only solution is to stop using the 3G network (Turn off 3G network and Cellular Data). if I swap to wifi only my iPhone battery act just like before and maybe better. I don't know if apple is working on IOS update to solve this.

I have updated my IPhone to IOS 5.0.1 ,, same problem. when using 3G it consume the battery in a weird way.. ;(

was expecting a better solutoin apple.. this is really bad and sad

after update my batter went from 77% to 38% in almost and hour.. don't really know what to do now.. shall i change my phone to android ... any suggestions..

I downloaded this update early this afternoon. It does absolutely nothing. Watched my phone drop 10% in 40 minutes. I love the phone (iPhone 4s), but Apple has definitely missed the mark on the battery issue. You know it's funny...my iPad on iOS 5 stays charged forever. I am beginning to wonder if this is a hardware issue. A recall on these phones would be bad for Apple.
