Cannot send message in iMessage

Hello:

Wondering if anyone else is having the same issue with iMessage.

I can type a message and pick a contact whom to send it to, however cannot actually send the message unless I include a video or photo with it. Also, I cannot reply to any text messages unless I also include a video or photo with my reply! Any thoughts?

I am using an iPad II with the iOS 5 operating system.
