no TV out in iOS 5?

I work at night. I own an iPhone 3G S. I connect my iPhone to my portable tv and watch movies and YouTube videos to pass the time. Well, up until iOS 5 that is. I did the update like everyone else. Fooled around with the new features and even signed up for iCloud. But when it came time to watch a video, through YouTube or Photos or the new Video app, nothing happened. It wouldn't play on my tv. I went to the settings and found the tv out setting missing. Is there a way I can go back to iOS 4.x? And where do I go to let Apple know my disappointment?

Thanks,

iPhone 3GS, iOS 5

That picture is from a iPhone 4s. I now have one and tried to hook up component cable to Sony Bravia HDTV. Still no tv out option as shown in the picture. The tv says there is no signal from the input in which I have the cable plugged. Everything is connected. I wonder if the cable may have been damaged? I can't imagine the Verizon iPhone 4s would be the reason for this not working?!

My Ipad2, Ipod4 and Iphone 4 All are running IOS Ver 5.0.1 But I believe this bug is from a previous version of 4.

I have tried it with an Apple Cord and a Belkin Cord. Connected and not connected. In TV, Computer and the head unit of my Nissan. They all worked around 8 months ago. But I tried agian a couple of months ago and whilst there is Audio there is no Video. It has to be the PAL/NTSC toggle. But where is it?

Come on Apple raise your game. Dont go the way of Microsoft and forget what your business is based on. Us your customers.

I keep looking for alternatives as the lack of a fix is frustrating. I have an Apple TV gen 2 and the latest software upgrade let's you display video via Airplay. Except only for iPad2s and iPhone 4S devices. Oops, I have an iPad and iPod Touch 3rd gen. So I got a VGA converter and am doing OK connecting to my TV with my Windows laptop. Very disappointed with Apple.

I can connect my laptop to my tv, as well. However, I keep running into the same problem: I don't have wi-fi or any other access to the internet, other than by using my iPhone. So, no Apple TV, no Roku, no Netflix from my computer to my tv. I understand that this puts me in a category with many folks in their golden years, but I'm REALLY short on funds, and unlike New Orleans, my town doesn't offer free wi-fi. That's why I'm desperately looking for a solution that isn't going to cost me (more) every month.

This is a little off-topic for this thread, but if I had to choose between wifi in the home and a data account on my mobile phone, I'd go for wifi in the home. Depends on the pricing options available in your area, of course, but for me the monthly charges would be about the same and you get a lot more with wifi in the home (laptop access to free tv on hulu, abc, acorn online, others). You could use the wifi for home access on your iPhone but then have Internet access on the phone only in free places like libraries, coffee shops, etc. That's the trade-off. May be an additional initial outlay for a DSL Modem/bridge or something but could be very cost-effective considering what you get--better speed and much broader access. For example Hulu from a laptop has lots for free but via a mobile device requires a subscription.

So I had left the component cable sit for a month and tried it again today to see if I could get the tv out option on my iPhone 4s with iOS 5.0.1. Still no tv out. Still no video. Just audio. Tv doesn't recognize component cable is plugged into that input on tv. I think the cable may be faulty. Has anyone heard whether this is only an iPhone with ios 5.0.1 problem?

Another voice heard from...thanks for the back stab Apple...they must be worried people will use a work around ( ie Netflix) to view content that they could supply via iTunes for a premium...I've been a big supporter of Apple, but crap like this tells me the accounting dweebs are taking over, and making decisions based on the bottom line, not the user experience. RIP Mr Jobs...the worms are burrowing into the Apple.

Firstly, if you had read the thread before cluttering it up with another unfounded complaint, then you would have understood what really was the cause of the issue – it's a bug that was introduced in iOS 5 GM.

Furthermore, it is obviously being worked on, as are any bugs that Apple's developers come across.

Secondly, conspiracy theories with no evidence such as yours don't do anything except make you sound ignorant.

Since I don't want to also be guilty of making assertions without evidence, here are three reasons why:

  1. Netflix has had TV out since May 2010 for its iPad app, and October 2010 for its iPhone app.
  2. Furthermore, in the iOS 5 betas, TV Out was working correctly.
  3. Not only that, but this bug is exhibited even in Apple's official apps (YouTube, Safari, Videos).

Hence, your "theory" does not add up.

Bad news, gang, I just tried it with iOS 5.1 and still no dice for TV OUT on my iPad 1. Still just audio. Maybe Apple is not going to fix this to force people into newer versions of the iPad. Too bad for me: I started using Apple products just when they started acting like every other annoying and insensitive big company. So I'll buy their products when I like them but there's not a lot of reason for brand loyalty anymore outside of ecosystem convenience.

I see we have some more conspiracy theories here! Excellent assumptions! Did you check before assuming that first-gen iPad users were the only ones experiencing this bug – i.e. a software error caused by human error?

The thread is clear in showing that many other different devices are also experiencing the bug; hence your silly claim has no basis whatsoever. Furthermore, my iPhone 4S – the latest iPhone, in case you didn't know – still exhibits the bug.

People need to realise something: these things aren't fixed overnight. Engineers need to prioritise between minor bugs like this one, and critical bugs such as call and battery issues! So BE PATIENT.

A tantrum won't get the bug fixed more quickly, Gene. Apple are still on the case.

If you think Apple are "like every other annoying and insensitive big company" perhaps you should try buying a competing device – I'm sure you'll enjoy having no support and more.

Apple have been nothing but helpful in all my dealings with them, including this one, and, as I said, are still on the case.
