Itunes won't sync after upgrade to iOS 5

I've looked around here and most people are dealing with error codes and such but my upgrade appeared to go flawless. But when it was complete and the iPad 1 came up it had the folders I created post upgrade but none of the Apps. I checked iTunes and they're all there even the 78 books I had in iBooks but none of them are on the iPad. I've tried syncing several times, even done a complete restore but I can't seem to get the stuff from iTunes on my MacBook Pro to the iPad. Anyone have an idea? Am I missing something basic?

I have the same problem but with iPhone4 (using itunes 10.5). I had no problems on the update, but with the restore after the update of IOS.

I was able to solve the restore problems and I have all my apps contacts and photos on my iphone but no songs.

If I try to sync any song, new app o new photo, it will say its syncing and at the last step of sync will say breifly Cancelling Sync and will stop with no error but no music or app on my phone. Though music will show greyed out on itunes under my device.

Hopefully someone will post a solution. I give up! I've been trying to fix this all weeked !

What a headache this new IOS5.

Not sure about apps and music, I had this issue with my books. After trying to get them to sync over and over with no results, I realized that in my library I had unchecked all of the books. In previous versions of iTunes and iOS, it didn't seem to matter whether they were checked in your library as long as the book was selected to sync on the device page. Now it does...

I re-checked all of my books and now they sync (at least the ones I selected to sync on the device page).

Click the iPad in the sidebar in iTunes, then click the Apps near the top of the screen and make sure "Sync Apps" is checked, then click Apply. Do the same with everything else (Photos, Books, etc.) and sync again.

I wish it were that easy. I have the checkmarks for all the areas I want sync'd but when I start the sync, it stops after a second or two without sync-ing. (I believe it goes up to step 3 of 6 and stops)

Gatineau,

d6d24r94's comment actually worked for me-- I also found another website displaying pretty much the same idea-- it wasn't exactly as straightforward as "step one, step two, step three..." because I ended up doing pretty much the same steps in various orders before it finally took hold.

For that technique to work, you've got to do it individually, as in ONLY sync the apps, then ONLY sync the movies, then ONLY sync the music, etc...

I think it has to do with the iphoto and other apps that need to have their databases updated to the "new" database style for IOS 5-- I wasn't experiencing problems with iPhoto so I didn't consider it as a source of the problem, but I derived a drastic solution that actually did work from a website describing how to delete the iphoto index so that it will rebuild itself.

the solution that really worked for me was to (I use OS X, not sure what to for windows)

1. Quit iTunes

2. Delete the itunes library files. Not the actual data, but all the helper files in ~/music/itunes such as "iTunes Music Library.xml" and "iTunes Library Extras.itdb"--- I trashed them all but didn't empty trash just in case. Again- I didn't erase any actual MEDIA or APPS, I just erased those little xml and database files.

3. Open iTunes again and tell it to look in my home directory for media.

This solution is drastic-- it forces iTunes to think it has nothing whatsoever. So, for that particular iPad and iMac, I had to rebuild the entire music library from scratch-- luckily on that computer it was all of an 8GB music collection. The music files were still there, so it was just a matter of iTunes finding them again and then processing all the album artwork and genius...

next, I had to get my apps and books and other purchases from the store back. Just use the iTunes Store side tab within iTunes, sign in to your account if you're not already, and click the "Purchases" link, which will bring up all your purchases and allow you to download them again.

Like I said, this is DRASTIC. I don't know if it's the RIGHT way or if there is a better, easier, way-- but these steps worked for me. the iPad now syncs just fine, seems to have no issues whatsoever, and even seems to be doing the auto-sync via WiFi just fine...

Has anyone figured out if this would work on a Windows PC?

I got it to work!!! Really easliy it turned out.

I had two problems actually. The apps still are not syncing, but the "greyed out" music/book I got to work.

Instead of dropping files into Itunes library and then dropping them into my device, I dropped them straight to the device, bypassing the library and Viola, it was all there!!! (Honestly, it happened on accident).
