iOS update for ipad and forgotten backup password

Today I updated my Ipad 1 with the new iOS. When itunes went to restore my Ipad it asked for my password for my backup. I have forgotten it. How do I retrieve what has been backed up? Is there somewhere on my laptop I can find what I have backed up without the password? Thanks!
