Get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:

• Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
• Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
• Open iTunes.
• Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then click Restore.

Depends which Kindle you have. I just used the Kindle cable to restore the Apple TV. The version that has a USB on one side that plugs into a AC plug and micro usb on the other that plugs to Kindle. Pull the AC plug off and you have USB to MicroUSB.

I found that my default DNS servers were causing this issue for me.

i temporarily changed DNS to OpenDNS and it updated instantly.

Could you tell me how to do this?

I went into the configuration page of my modem/router (to which the Apple TV is connected) and changed the DNS servers (both primary and secondary) to 8.8.8.8 (this is google's DNS server) instead of using the ones provided by my ISP. Rebooted the modem. At that point the Apple TV had no problem downloading and installing the update. When the procedure finished, I re-enabled the DNS servers from my ISP.

Duuuude, you are super smart. You saved me money. I had the same problem and turns out I had a micro USB for my old Nook from Barnes & Noble. The power cable is just like the Kindle. Sure enough, it was exactly what I needed to restore my Apple TV. Thanks for your post. Very helpful!

You might not need to buy the cable as several devices use this same one.

If you have a Kindle, the charge cable is a micro USB...

The kindle cable doe NOT fit the apple TV micro usb port.

What other devices use this micro USB cable? I do not have a kindle and need to restore my Apple TV. I do not have an Apple store close, so where do I buy this cable?

If you have a ps3, the cable to charge your controller is also a micro usb. If not, check on your devices at home, you will probably found one.

Not quite. The PS3 uses a mini USB cable. He needs a micro USB one.
